None other than Martin O'Malley, the former head of the Social Security Administration, has voiced very real concerns. He's a good, solid Dem with an excellent reputation who until recently ran the administration. In other words, he knows what he's talking about and he doesn't have bad intentions.
It's obvious that some posters on DU are scared and confused. That's not their fault. It's the fault of the current administration, and they are just doing their best to cope.
For that reason, I don't find fault with anything they choose to post. Maybe they need to vent or want more information. Maybe they want to express to those of us who don't rely completely on SS as our income how crucial these payments are. Whatever their motive, I sympathize.
Because of their dogged pursuit of this topic, I have learned quite a bit about how SS is administered and used the info to deal with some issues that I'm having. I don't see their contributions as anything but a positive, and I hope that DU continues to be a source of information on this topic.

(40,106 posts)is what concerns me. Right now it's a .5% expense but it could go up to 25% if the robber barons run things. That will be taken out of payments apparently. All speculation but not so far fetched.

(8,804 posts)... the point of the program is guaranteed income.
I am confident in my ability to manage my retirement, but others may not be. And unless there is IS a guaranteed performance, we will have people who will wreck their account and be left with nothing to live on.
That's disastrous.
