(6,138 posts)Do you watch commercial TV where any of the above hawk their products and services?
Do you buy products packaged in plastic? Do you have any dealings at all with businesses or corporations owned by billionaires?
People living in glass houses should not throw rocks. The vast majorityof the United States population lives in glass houses.

(894 posts)Of course folks buy stuff from capitalist companies, drive their car around to support their life, etc. Back in the day, some of my friends decided to live on the land rather than work for the man. That lasted about six months. We live in a monopolistic capitalist country. We are the recipients of a terrible health care system, declining career opportunities, a housing policy that squeezes folks into homelessness, etc. etc. We resist as best we can. Folks that contribute to this forum are not the problem.

(2,721 posts)to create a community and further our learning. I don't see Instagram or Bluesky providing the same kind of platform.
I admit I don't do any of it on my own--don't know how anyone has the time
But I'd like to participate in some of these groups without supporting Nazis.
Easy to switch from Twiiter/x for Bluesky
So easy not to buy a Tesla
Don't know what replaces Instagram or Facebook.
Apparently there are replacements for Google, just have to do the research and make the change
Getting off of Amazon entirely (and related companies like Abe Books) has been difficult for me. What have people done instead?
Unless there is a concerted movement and help for consumers only the most dedicated and the most tech-savvy will do it. Not enough to create the impact necessary. We need to do to all these oligarchs what is happening to Tesla. It needs to be very expensive to be a pro-Trump oligarch.

Using Facebook means you hand over your data, snippets of your life. And what's worse, you help them suck up the data of your friends and family even when we are not on facebook or minimize participation. It's all good for the data brokers.
Like the saying goes, if it's "free," you're the product.

(18,484 posts)In my feed, I saw her post claiming that some of her posts were no longer showing on her page. I went to her page and sure enough, the last post listed there was from March 26, I scrolled down and tried to figure out if there was an "innocent" explanation.
I don't see HCR making shit up about this. I saw her post today in my feed (I think the post was from today, but god knows that FB feed is pretty weird already about what shows up from what dates); and then couldn't find her latest posts on her page - posts that I *KNOW* I had seen in my feed before.
So it is possible - and if you watched her live episode today I think she suggested the same - that there is just something weird and unintentional going on with FB. BUT meanwhile, she is letting people know they can always find her stuff at substack. Given what we already know about Zuck, I'm headed over to substack shortly myself.

(555 posts)There needs to be a big public whining fest. Media personalities need to pick it up and run with the zuckership label. "silencing liberal voices" should be on the lips of every account, influencer and talk show etc.
For being a bunch of talent-less hacks they do drama so much better than we do.

I did not for privacy reasons and I was undergoing chemotherapy at the time.

I am not on Twitter, IG, TikTok, Snapchat, WhatsApp or blue sky

I live 2k miles from my family and have lived further away so its the platform we use to keep in touch. Not changing that anytime soon.

She's likely our main 'news' source. Even tho some days what she has to say is simply too painful to read. As she's a professor of political history we often learn something of how we have arrived at this point, and how this had been avoided in the past.
One of her powerful recent articles looked at the attempt by Secretary of State Seward (later of Seward's FollyPurchase of Alaska fame) to basically take over the government from Lincoln and start a war with *anybody* to convince the secessionist states to return to the Union to fight whatever foreign foe he could conjure up.
Seward complained that Lincoln had not yet established a policy either domestic or foreign and said he had figured out the solution to the nations political crisis, in which seven statesSouth Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texashad seceded from the Union in the weeks after Lincoln was elected president but before he took office. [W]e must, Seward wrote, Change the question before the Public from one upon Slavery, or about Slavery for a question upon Union or Disunion.
The way to do that, he wrote, was to rally Americans around the flag. To do so, he told Lincoln, I would demand explanations from Spain and France, categorically, at once. I would seek explanations from Great Britain and Russia, and send agents into Canada, Mexico and Central America, to rouse a vigorous continental spirit of independence on this continent against European intervention. And if satisfactory explanations are not received from Spain and France, Would convene Congress and declare war against them.

At the time, about 160 years ago, this failed. However, the current regime seems determined to try this ploy yet once again. After all, it worked fine a few decades later with the Spanish-American War around the turn of the last century when Gilded Age newspaperman Hearst (may have) said "You supply the pictures, I'll supply the war" after the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbour.
I'm unconvinced that if we invade Greenland (a territory with a population about the same as Carson City, Nevadaaround 56/57K) using our military of around 1.3 MILLION active duty members that many (aside from MAGA Cultists) will find this reason to wrap themselves in the Stars and Stripes (well, more would, I think, be happy to wrap themselves in the Stars and Bars)
She is, for the nonce, still on YT as well
