So I have a story for this cloudy Sunday afternoon:

The very nice, humanistic, fairly liberal Democrats who are my employer need to go back to Canada for family reasons of tremendous significance. They have dual citizenship for nearly 30 years and are both licensed professionals in two states. Neither has a whisper of a criminal record and are model citizens in every respect.

All that being said, they are terrified to go back to Canada shortly, for fear of at best, harsh treatment at the US border upon their return and at worst, being denied re-entrance due to…whatever. They are not what racists would call “White” and are registered Democrats and subscribe and/or attend many of what these fascists would term “left-wing” websites.

Their friends have had problems, significant problems, upon re-entry, and they are in a quandary as to what to do. I will be very interested in seeing what occurs over the next three weeks. Stay tuned.

I have a friend who adopted a child from Guatemala, who has been naturalized since she was two. I suspect that person also needs to be concerned.

I have lived in the States for almost 30 years. Didn't get my citizenship. Whatever. But I have my green card. The only "crime" I have, a couple speeding tickets(paid for) and some parking tickets.
I am planning to go visit my elderly mother this summer for a couple weeks. I, too am very worried about the border. The one bit of solace, is advice from an article I read at CBC.ca. A travel person said the best and safest way to travel to the States from Canada right now is from a Canadian Airport. The reason being, you are going through US Customs on Canadian soil. Not American. So if it gets too intense, you can simply tell them, that you've decided not to travel afterall and just walk away. Doesn't get you back in the country, but at least you won't get sent to El Salvador!

I checked the day after the election and she was checking about her husband who doesn't. He is pitiful American just like most of us. Guess I should check in and see if they have a plan. They can both work online.

Needless to say, don't tell the US authorities about the other passport.

I'd be thinking about just staying in Canada, if I was them and had dual citizenship. The thing about walls... whether made up of bricks and steel, digits, or customs people is that it cuts both ways. While people may now have a hard time getting back into the country, I worry about when it comes to people leaving the country at some point. China, Russia, and whoever else, has requirements to be met in order to get the okay to travel - both inside and outside the country. I wonder how long before we join that club.
