Bill Maher Is Dead To Me
Published by digby on April 13, 2025
Again

Maher had dinner with Trump (and Kid Rock) and says he couldn’t have been more wonderful:

“You can hate me for it, but I’m not a liar. Trump was gracious and measured,” Maher said. “And why isn’t that in other settings- I don’t know, and I can’t answer, and it’s not my place to answer. I’m just telling you what I saw, and I wasn’t high.”

The comedian showed up a printout of dozens of insults the president has thrown his way over the years, including calling him a “sleazebag,” “stone cold crazy,” a “really dumb guy,” and more. Maher revealed that Trump actually signed the list.

The Real Time host said he did not receive pushback from Trump when questioning some of his positions, and he was also shocked to hear Trump admit he “lost” the 2020 presidential election.

“I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And, honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump. That’s just how it went down. Make of it what you will. Me? I feel it’s emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days,” Maher said.

At one point during the dinner, Maher confronted Trump and accused him of “scaring” his own citizens too much with talk of a third term and more.

“At one point, I said to him, ‘you’re scaring people. Do you really want to be scaring your own citizens so much?,’” he recalled. “And I know now you’re all saying, ‘and what did he say to that?’ Honestly, I don’t remember. But it wasn’t, okay, I’ll stop. So MAGA fans, don’t worry. Your boy gave me nothing, just hats. Hats in a very generous amount of time and a willingness to listen and accept me as a possible friend, even though I’m not MAGA, which was the point of the dinner.”

Gag. As one of the guests on his show said, “it was nothing but PR for him and you were his prop.”

Pathetic.

Don’t watch it if you’ve just had your lunch.

his opinions. I always thought he was one of us so I would take up for him. This is different! You don't normalize Trump and his dismantling of democracy. Now when I see Maher all I see is a sell out. Fuck you Bill!

with Donald Trump."..."I feel it's emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days." WTF does that even mean?

Clinton and Obama wouldn't invite Maher to a private dinner the White House with Kid Rock because they're serious men and Maher is a clown. That's why he feels so comfortable talking to Trump, a vulgar carnival barker, con man and consummate bullshit artist.

when he smugly spoke about his visit with Trump. It was a sickening display of his stupidity and his privilege. Go F yourself Maher.

He’s had a few funny moments in the past but I find him very pretentious.

8. I've noticed Maher is conspicuous by his absence here on DU

since I've had access to my big computer and can read some of the site. He was marching quickly toward irrelevance last fall when disaster struck and I wrny offline.

I can't swear to it, but the braying and guffaws in the above clip sound like a laugh track. Either that or he's given up on his elders and the younger folks alike, and has gone full on Joe Rogan for his crowd, clueless Gen X doofi sticking together.

In any case, the best thing I can call his above effort is unsophisticated to the point of cluelessness, he sure as hell doesn't know anything about narcissists, especially malignant narcissists. He just got schmoozed into the category of "likely asset," and he has no clue about how that went down or what it's likely to mean.

So good luck to ya, Bill, as you continue to make stale Clinton joikes while the youngest GenZ shrugs and says "Who?" and your appearances dry up. Your run was a long one, probably longer than it should have been.

So exit stage right and buh bye.

9. I stopped watching when he thought a clock could be a bomb.

This was several years ago. A Muslim kid in Texas with a talent for electronics built a digital clock. He took it to school to show to his friends and teachers. Someone worried it might actually be a bomb, so he was reported to the police, who promptly arrested him.

He was proud of his accomplishment and wanted to show it off. People who build bombs don't often do that. There was also nothing attached to the clock that could possibly explode. Nevertheless, the local Powers That Be decided that any Muslim kid walking around with home-made electronic devices was a terrorist, and they treated him as such.

Should the police have given the clock a close look, just in case? Maybe. But arresting the kid? Everyone thought that was going too far.

Except Maher, who said it looked like a bomb to him, and who thought the police did the right thing.

That was the moment he jumped the shark for me. And he's jumped many more sharks since then.

I keep thinking that Maher can't descend any deeper into the fascist muck, that he can't possibly open his mouth any wider in order to pleasure trump, that there's just no way he can possibly be more of a lowlife asshole---and he proves me wrong, every fucking time.

Repulsive, to the point of being vomit-inducing.

An Apprentice producer weighs in on Maher getting used by Trump: “I assure you Trump is laughing and telling everyone around him how easy it was to manipulate Bill… Trump’s superpower is telling whoever he’s with what they want to hear…”
