(1,468 posts)There needs to be serious, continuous talk in this country about how the hatred and the religious nonsense destroyed us. Japan couldn't do it, Germany couldn't do it, even way back, England couldn't do it. But we did it to ourselves. Took away two hundred plus years of trying to make a better world, be a better country, shine a light out into the world, set an example.
Less than one hundred days, and it's gone. The respect, the hard-won human rights, the hope that maybe we can leave things better for the next generations. Gone. We weren't perfect. Far from it. But a lot of us were trying, doing our best to bring the haters and the stupid along with us. Make them live in a civilized society, whether they liked it or not.
We're going to have to control hate speech. Get rid of monopolies on news outlets. Make people pay for encouraging hate, for acting on it, for trying to make decent people suffer.
Enough is enough. We can't have nice things when these people are allowed to just rant and rave, to be hateful, to do hateful things. Time for it to end. And yes, someone will say, who decides what's hate? Well, you know it. The Constitution forbids it. That's simple enough to figure out.

(1,208 posts)They are not going to learn. Most people dont read and oral history can be based on myths, the war of northern aggression ( the civil war), America is the greatest country and we saved the the entire world during the the Second World War. Most of the people in the southern states vote against their interests based on lies and myths. I am not going to indulge them. Their ignorance has helped to destroy this country and I am going to shame them.

(4,044 posts) my family and their friends are Republicans, and they fully support whats happening, saying, "Its what we voted for." They view the tariffs as a transitional phase that will resolve by the end of the year.
Sometimes, it honestly feels like they would rather risk losing their homes than see deportations slow down. When due process for migrants is mentioned, they laugh and argue that migrants shouldnt have any rights at all. And when the name Abrego Garcia comes up, its almost unsettling how much satisfaction they take in whats happening to him.
Its eye-opening and disturbing to see how deep political loyalty can run, even at the expense of basic human empathy.

Who's really being 'owned', when the cost of living skyrockets, their retirement investments are tanked, unemployment skyrockets, deaths from pandemics and natural disasters increase while health care is gutted and FEMA and the National Weather Service are destroyed, all in favor of giving huge tax breaks to people who already have more money than they or their families could spend in ten lifetimes? " But you and I know this war will not have any real victors and that, once it is over, we will have to go on living together forever on the same soil." -- Albert Camus
I just got home from addressing an audience -- some Democrats, some maga, plus many I don't know about -- about the Iroquois influence on the colonial settlers during the Revolutionary War. About 1/3 of the whites wanted independence, 1/3 wanted to stay connected to England, and 1/3 were lucky they didn't have to read stupid arguing between old former friends on facebook. I spoke of the rallies in Boston leading up to the Boston Tea Party -- an estimated 7,000 out of a total population of 16,000 had taken part in protests against the new taxes. The organizers had actually tried to get Mohawk support for the dumping of the tea. And many dressed like Mohawk warriors.
I spoke of meetings the Iroquois leadership participated in with the Founding Fathers. When Franklin introduced his Plan of Union, it was similar to the Iroquois Confederacy. Ben proposed to call Congress the "grand council." It was rejected, and then Franklin's friend Joseph Galloway would introduce his plan of union. Though it really didn't get any serious support, I mentioned it because of a family relationship. Then the Articles of Confederation, then the Constitution.
I told of how Onondaga Chief Paul Waterman, Faithkeeper Oren Lyons, and I used to discuss that era. I asked what their ancestors greatest contributions to the Founding Fathers were? The Power of Ideas and the Power of the Good Mind were their answers. Neither dynamic -- one individual, one group, allows for people who want to live in peace to cling to petty hostilities, as advocated for in the OP. People need to reach a higher level of consciousness, and that cannot happen unconsciously, when one is saturated by negative emotions.
I ended by saying that I think our Constitution is a work of genius. It's the product of the Power of the Good Mind. I said that people need to read that and those other historic documents, because we are at risk of losing them.

(76,682 posts)A higher consciousness in no way equals being a victim. It's possible to have conversations with those you disagree strongly with, in a respectful way. When I worked at the mental health clinic, I was assigned to teach "dispute resolution" to the inmates at the county jail. Some of them actually learned from that. Likewise, men and women who were court-ordered to attend DV group sometimes learned some beneficial skills.
In a sense, I might be more relaxed in both communicating with damaged individuals and in not fearing physical or mentall aggression. I fought 329 bouts when I boxed. Never lost a street fight. And I remember John Lennon saying it is only those who were most violent that could become the most peaceful. Heck, my late friend Rubin Carter did that.

(14,147 posts)The majority of South Africans grumbled, but accepted that racist (and classiest) autocracy had been holding their country corrupt and in poverty; and punishing otherwise neutral people for circumstances of their birth in that society wouldn't keep the country moving forward.
They punished the worst offenders, attempted to recover some of what was lost to the corruption, and have been trying to move forward, opening up opportunities that weren't available before.
But Mob Bosses, like Plantation Owners, always think they are owed everything they stole from their prey or captive workforce.

(773 posts)I hate to break it to you but, nobody and I mean nobody that voted for this Felon is a good person. I would give a benefit of the doubt if it weren't for his previous term in office which just hinted at his evil cruelty, his behavior between terms and the well publicized manual of how to destroy America titled Project 2025.
Nobody that voted for him is a good person. Those that didn't vote should be considered just as bad. Minorities, women and impoverished that voted for him are especially deserving of him and the destruction that his administration leaves behind. I heard somewhere "you got what you voted for." You may live to 100 and never make up for what you did. And I for one will never let you forget. If there is a hell, then you have already begun your well deserved journey. Bon voyage you stupid, stupid f.cks.
blubunyip
(117 posts)--his previous term, his behavior for 4 years between, and Project 2025 were red flags. Anyone who uses the excuse of "I didn't vote for this" is refusing to accept responsibility for bringing this darkness upon us. To say "I voted for him out of ignorance, and I'm sorry" is way more honest. That person can see the light and change for the better.
"Nobody that voted for him is a good person." I agree. Others may say it depends what your definition of "good" is. Others may be more willing to accept the two-sides to one person argument. Example: He helps all his neighbors even though he supports the 2025 agenda. Others may say "we're not all perfect either." (Right, but some of us try a whole lot harder not to deliberately hurt others).
For me, this is a line in the sand. If you voted for him THIS time, you are either too stupid or you are smart but sinfully corrupt, and therefore complicit in these crimes against humanity. Vote MAGA, you are Maga. After this election, there are really no moderate "good" Republicans. Sorry if this offends. I have Trump voters in my family, too, thankfully not in my nuclear family. I can pity them, but I have little respect now. That will never change. I consider them dangerously ignorant, consumed by fear, concerned mainly with money and status, with a constant need to feel superior at somebody else's expense. These aren't admirable or "good" qualities to me. These relatives go to church too, even more hypocritical, while they worship false gods. They lack perception of what is truly important in this difficult thing we call life.
To those Magas who see their mistake but wish to be excused...I say
Own it, ya ___ing idiots! Atone. Repent. Ask for forgiveness. Don't just whine that you were lied to. Of course you were lied to--that's all they do. And that was crystal clear before the election.

I find the path forward usually starts with questions. If you really want to come from a place of trying to bring Healing. We sort of want to forget all the heinous hideous disgusting things. Like Q was a lie factory and so many people believed it ,that was priming people to believe bullshit and Trump telling people that Barack Obama wasnt born in the US even though we freaking knew him growing up I personally went to school in the same school as him and played with him on the playground. His Dean in high school his classmates his grandparents that lived in town right here, everybody knew them, this is a very small town and we are connected.
Trump said he sent a team over here to look into it 9- that never happened. That was a freaking lie. Start with like what is important to them- ask them. What do you think is important? And try and not yell and run on like I am kind of yelling and ranting now.
I hope you mentioned that the word conservative has no place anywhere in the same universe. As these people, they are taking our treasure are inheritance of generations in science and research and health in 1 million ways that the government helps us with very little fanfare, they are stealing from us Not just our present but our future. Just one tiny question, why is it that we cant get health warnings and CDC warnings and virus updates and food recalls anymore? Is there any reason why we cant have that basic thing? Is there any reason why they appeared to want us to be sick And weekend against fighting disease diseases that are clearly emergent?
I gotta go thank you for asking. Good luck bye-bye

As for our side being "privileged and righteous" because we are right and they are wrong -- I don't accept that. For one thing a LOT of the privileged and righteous among us voted FOR him.
We're indulging our egos by stating our Truth? "We should get over being right" --why? I hope NOT to get over being as right as I feel about this shit show. How does that mean we're not working, to what...proselytize, recruit, make them feel welcome? Olive branches and all that? Opponents of the 47 regime must radically alter our response. And Anat Shenker-Osorio is the clearest voice and has created the best guide I've seen to date.
She was on the That Trippi Show April 18th, (episode: "If you want to touch a nerve, you have to touch a nerve " )
Please listen, wherever you get your podcasts. This is so important.
And here is Anat's Freedom Over Fascism Toolkit. Her guidance sets out a simple way to stop running after the latest horror and talk about the horrors within the same narrative frame -- over and over and over.

(117 posts)Thanks! I will definitely pass along!
Makes the excellent point that you don't meet the adversary where they are, you meet them where you envision us all going. But the writers put practical specifics to that effort. It's a toolkit-- we badly need the "how to" spelled out.
Too often when I see people advocating engaging with Magas, there's a whiff of liberal guilt and the necessity to "understand" them and reach out--smells like triangulation, the urge to pile everybody on some mythical middle ground. The lazy approach. What this website seems to be advocating is how to sell your own position in a stronger way. Which takes more focus and work.
I like the assumption of success by practical means. We do have an opportunity here--it's pretty clear that The Sane of all stripes, ages, colors, persuasions and affiliations-- need to come together for this fight, but it cannot be at the expense of the most hardcore progressive values.
pat_k
(11,171 posts)I hope others take the time to review. I believe Anat's approach could be a game changer. I'm thinking about pulling together a package and taking a shot at persuading my Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Sens Murray and Cantwell to review and heed the guidance.
