(and I, personally, would go further to say that a lot of the direction and agenda are really driven by a singular figure in the White House as well) In short - a Republican administration with a different person at the helm - would in all likelihood look (and feel) significantly different from what we experience today.

We marched in the 60's for civil rights, voting rights, the environment, women's rights, abortion rights (which affects the lives of both sexes!!!) and many many people were killed (think Ohio and southern lynchings), and had their heads busted (think '68 democratic convention and equal rights), and we marched against wars-for-money (think Vietnam).
