Mrs. Betty Bowers posted "Let's get #WokePope trending. It will infuriate all the right people." Apparently, the right is already calling him that. If they're not happy, I'm all for him. By the way, I am not Catholic, but I approve of the social justice wing of the church. And it seems that Pope Leo belongs to that branch and not the JDVance branch, so I'm happy for Catholics everywhere.

(109,542 posts)necessarily make him homophobic or anti-woman but... Like Francis, I expect he will carve around the edges and his initial changes will be more those of tolerance, rather than "repeal" of doctrine-- but this non-Catholic agnostic is still pleased at this point with the choice.

(5,419 posts)Bettie
(18,231 posts)from me it would have been the same. The entire church is complicit in covering up the abuse of children. That's a fact.
Also, I'm not a Catholic or part of any religion, but people who abuse children seem to gravitate to churches where they have access to children who are told that a. they can be trusted and b. you must listen to them and do as they say.
Look at the protestant pastors/youth pastors who have been caught recently.
I also generally have a pretty dim view of churches overall.
So, what I was saying is that on that topic, this guy is probably no better or worse than any of them.
Fact is, even the "liberals" in the Catholic church hierarchy are very much not good for women, children, GLBT+, or a whole list that would be too long to type right now.

(14,072 posts)Trump is criminalizing the Church's long tradition of offering sanctuary to immigrants. Maybe the new Pope will order American clergy to ignore these laws?

So, Trump's jackbooted thugs are threatening to come after Priests who refuse that information.

devout (more concerned with Christ's message than with clergy or canon), but I'd think anyone, Catholic, Christian or not, can see the hate inspired words and actions of Trump, Greene, and their associates, for the evil it IS.
Especially when their words and actions do nothing but sow chaos, discord, and division, and do harm to people most in need, at home AND abroad.
But hey, par for the course from them eh? No surprise.

(5,612 posts)Prevost has opposed the ordination of women (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordination_of_women)to the diaconate (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deacon),[40] stating not only that it "doesn't necessarily solve a problem" but that "it might make a new problem".[41]
As a bishop[when? (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Dates_and_numbers#Chronological_items)] Prevost opposed the inclusion of curriculum regarding "teachings on gender in schools" in Peru (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peru), stating that the "promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don't exist".[42]
In 2012, Prevost lamented that popular culture fostered "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel", citing the "homosexual lifestyle (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_lifestyle)" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children".[42] After Pope Francis's 2023 declaration Fiducia supplicans (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiducia_supplicans) allowed Catholic priests to bless (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blessing_in_the_Catholic_Church) couples who are not married according to church teaching (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_in_the_Catholic_Church)(including same-sex couples (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_relationship)), he criticized the practicality of the declaration in parts of Africa (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa)where homosexuality is still illegal, saying "our cultural situation is such that the application of this document is just not going to work".

(44,564 posts)and that is what I'm hoping Pope Leo will revitalize. Given his career as a missionary, it seems promising.
Re the anti-gay stuff, I heard that he made those comments in 2012, before Pope Francis was elected. I'm hopeful his views have gotten more balanced since then. In his message today, he talked about how god loves everyone.
