See if you can find what these people have in common.

I really didn't need more reasons to hate the man.

(194,584 posts)Scientific racist - the writer. This became a dog whistle from back then.
Redleg
(6,808 posts)It gave racists a "scientific" reason for their racism. As I recall, the American Psychological Association commissioned a taskforce to investigate this and they had a good number of criticisms for the book. First of all, there was no peer-review process. Second, the authors made some erroneous inferences based on their data in favoring the genetics explanation without due consideration of environmental and social impacts.

(194,584 posts)So Charles Murray just took his data and used it to back his preconceived result. Murray has made a lot of money as a speaker ever since.
It was not only not peer reviewed but when the data used was evaluated by several (really all of them) actual experts they couldnt find anything or any way to come to what Murray included in the book.

(2,524 posts)He wrote a long article in 1971 for The Atlantic about "I.Q." which created a storm of controversy.
He was one of many in academia upset that minorities and especially women were gaining a foothold in academia thanks to affirmative action. This attitude lay at the root of the dubious popularity of the pseudoscience of "evolutionary psychology," then called "sociobiology."

(194,584 posts)Sounds like they almost had the book written and then found something to support it in their minds.
valleyrogue
(2,524 posts)Murray simply capitalized on it because it seemed to support his own racist, sexist, "libertarian" notions.
Redleg
(6,808 posts)since I first read about it. People like Jordan Peterson don't give me much reason to change my mind about it.
valleyrogue
(2,524 posts)dressed up in scientific trappings. It was always a mostly a anti-feminist reaction to women's increasing foothold in society. It tries to justify male assholery by claiming it is all biological. MRAs like Peterson use it as a weapon in support of patriarchy.
Redleg
(6,808 posts)I am in an I-O pyschology-adjacent field (organizational behavior) and so haven't had much exposure to the EP stuff in grad school. I assumed EP's emphasis was on the universal, hard-wired aspects of the psychological processes.

And I'm not about to call him "self-possessed". He's clearly possessed, but not that kind of possessed.

(8,875 posts)As I have often pointed out to right wing bigots who insist they are not racist because "I would never use the n-word" (or some equally lame reason), when you provide food, water and plenty of sunshine to bigotry, it matters little whether you, yourself, use such language or engage in openly bigoted behavior!"
