for sending this to me. The YT channel this is on was co-founded by James Pumphrey, an actor and influencer formerly with Donut Media - https://www.theautopian.com/james-pumphrey-is-out-at-donut-media-as-private-equity-continues-to-scare-off-talent/ - who ran across some of the same serious problems caused by generative AI that I've been warning about here, and who was able to get nearly 3/4 of a million views on YT for his warning, Fake Car Channels Are Ruining Youtube.
I'm glad he touched on other harm done by genAI as well, but the damage being done to YouTube can't be overemphasized. And all the AI slop on YouTube, besides wasting people's time and taking views away from real people posting worthwhile videos, can also be doing a lot of harm with misinformation and disinformation. This garbage should not be allowed to pollute the internet, but AI companies including those that own platforms are trying to dominate the online world.

I just wanted to credit you for the find, and for sending it to me.

(56,843 posts)what I think is probably the most entertaining video on the harm done by generative AI that I've ever seen. I've posted a lot of videos about genAI here, like the one from British musician Fil Henley that I posted in Music Appreciation this morning
https://www.democraticunderground.com/1034146987
which I hope people will watch. And I've copied a lot of articles and social media posts about AI here, and some of those were very entertaining. But I'd never seen anything that gave such an entertaining and funny overview of how harmful AI slop - genAI content - really is.

(56,843 posts)for classical music on YT, what I saw first were videos that named famous composers, though many were recent videos made with AI art and video generators. Then when I looked at one, the YT recommendations beside it included this
https://youtube.com/@TranquilBirdMelodies
which is not bird song, but hundreds of videos with AI music and AI animation of birds (all with umbrellas) posted in the last 9 months.

(4,210 posts)The introductory verbiage implies the audio consists of recordings of orchestral performances of works by beloved composers of centuries ago. To me, the audio (supposedly strings) sounds more like the interior of a bees' nest. It is repetitive and very fast paced.
If you click the "Transcript" button on the YouTube page, you will find listings presented in some tonal language such a Chinese.
I think the YouTube file is designed to generate clicks for monetary and some other nefarious purposes.

(56,843 posts)I just posted a thread about more AI slop that will be flooding YouTube soon: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100220425726

(50,991 posts)Sometimes the titles don't match the content. Tired of shorts. It's all about clicks. 1000 clicks means a dime. Most prolific YTbers can make $60,000 a month.
But then I hate the cliquish Facebook, and the sluggish Linked In. Some media personalities populate more than a dozen apps. Don't want to miss a click.
I think the whole thing collapses of its own weight. I literally cannot absorb any more information. My week is drowning in webinars

(56,843 posts)in AI slop, with people on those platforms pushed to use AI. Didn't really surprise me with Facebook, but did with LinkedIn. Unfortunately they also wanted to generate more and more content so they encouraged people to use text generators to write.

(22,969 posts)Perhaps the internet is going to become totally useless for most things soon. I mean, you'll still be able to shop on it, find directions, read about a place you are going, but for things like news, current events, and even facts on science and medicine, it is kind of in a decaying spiral that will be sending people elsewhere soon.
Traditional media needs to reinvent itself to fill the gap we're about to see.

(56,843 posts)point where for a lot of things I prefer to see videos that were uploaded before genAI was available.
We definitely could use an option to weed out all AI-generated videos.

(19,183 posts)But yeah, I see those channels and they are repulsive. From the tacky mass produced pictures to the fake likes and comments. Best I can do is click on "Don't recomment this channel", hoping that someone gets the message.
One example of fake 'classical' music is the rise of historical photos presented as stills and compiled into a video. As a backing track there is a sort of free-form piano music; vaguely classical in style but not any known piece. It's really raucous and annoying.

(56,843 posts)YouTube and how many views they're getting - and how much attention non-AI videos and channels might've lost. Because YouTube viewers' attention is limited, and all the AI crap has to be taking views from better videos.

(2,355 posts)Its polluting the internet with garbage, as they point out in this video. Theres always been misinformation and disinformation out there, but there will come the time when its very difficult for intelligent people to distinguish between accurate information and bullshit.
Im heeding one of his points of advice: get off the internet (as much as practicable). Its actually quite remarkable that I even found this thread.
Bye bye.

(1,184 posts)...including channels that create totally fictional stories about public figures like Jasmine Crockett and Peyton Manning, and hide the fact the stories are made up in the "Views" banner while otherwise touting these pieces of disinformation as "real life stories". This crap is no better than the nonsense put out by Q-Anon or North Korean state TV.
John Oliver's program the other night focused on "AI Slop", and while I have yet to watch the video, I'd be unsurprised if this kind of thing is part of his coverage.

(56,843 posts)AI slop that I posted today, and then I posted the video in a third thread on the subject:

I agree completely about the disinformation online, much of it AI-generated, being very harmful.

(19,183 posts)But youtube has no clear mechanism to report or censure this crap. The videos sensationalising an imaginary celebrity death often turn their comments off so they still get clicks. And youtube is no better; they hide the number of 'thumbs down' to further distort the true state of video popularity.
Remember those two fresh faced guys who ingenously posed and announced, "Don't be evil"? Those lying feckers are at the bottom of the collapse of society as we know it.
