Republicans Take a Big Gamble in Texas

President Trump told Texas Republicans this morning that the party plans to press forward with a bold mid-cycle redistricting push aimed at flipping up to five Democratic-held House seats in the state.

The specific targets remain fluid, but GOP strategists are reportedly eyeing districts held by Reps. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), and Julie Johnson (D-TX)—along with a Houston-area seat and another based around Austin.

The goal is to redraw these districts to make them more favorable for Republican challengers in 2026.

But the plan comes with massive political risks. To make these Democratic seats more competitive, Republicans would likely need to siphon off GOP voters from surrounding districts—potentially weakening their own incumbents.

They have already started their regerrymandering in Tarrant County. The election judge Tim O’Hare who used to be the GOP chair. He’s wasting no time to disenfranchise the Democratic Party. I believe there are 4 districts in distress.
