Kamala Harris Deserved Better - Lincoln Square

The former VP became the fall guy for everyone else’s cowardice.
Kristoffer Ealy

Snip

Let’s be clear: Kamala Harris is a winner, even if the 2024 election didn’t go her way. She won when she became the first Black woman and first South Asian woman to be elected San Francisco D.A. She won when she became the first woman, Black person, and South Asian to serve as Attorney General of California. She won when she beat a crowded field to become a U.S. Senator — and then made history again as Vice President. California doesn’t hand out participation trophies. You don’t rise through the cutthroat hellscape of Golden State politics without grit, smarts, and strategy. And as CalMatters lays out, she made tangible contributions to that state — on consumer protection, criminal justice reform, cybersecurity, and more.

But folks want to pretend like she just lucked into every job she ever had. As if she didn’t battle the same system that would’ve eaten a less agile politician alive. You want to talk about courage? Try campaigning for the highest office in a country where tens of millions of people looked at Donald Trump — after the coups, the cages, and the classified documents — and said, “Yup, give me another four years of that.” That’s the reality Harris faced.

Snip

And here’s the part nobody likes to admit: If that transition had happened — if Biden had passed the baton through circumstance instead of choice — Harris would’ve been in a position to lead with clarity, not campaigning. There would’ve been no primary bloodbath, no George Clooney fan fiction, no split-the-vote speculation. Just a new president, already in office, tasked with doing the job. And from everything we know about her — her record in California, her Senate performance, her global diplomacy as VP — she could’ve done it. She would’ve risen to the occasion. Because that’s what she’s always done.

She didn’t fail the country. The country, once again, failed someone who dared to lead it while Black, while female, and while not asking for permission first.

Harris did the best she could with what the Democrats gave her — and frankly, she deserved better.

She did the best she could, under the circumstances, in 2024, but it’s doubtful she would ever be my choice in a competitive primary.

I think we saw the best performance she is capable of as a candidate in 2024. I have zero interest in giving it another chance.

Frankly, I’m not so sure she would do much better in the 2028 primaries than she did in 2020.

Factor in the GOP gerrymandering and 'legally' disenfranchised voters -- that was just enough to tip the scales in Dump's direction.

And oh how we're going to pay for it....

But the purge of voter rolls was enough in and of itself. Also, this NY lawsuit is already showing some pretty interesting stuff.

the aftermath of the election was firing squad on someone who showed more strength and courage than any of the armchair pundits.

Anyone who actually works for change knows that there is an army of do-nothings ready to criticize.

MANY Americans. But I also believe MANY others got exactly what they deserved in the ensuing CHAOS from this ratfck maladministration.

For their deliberate ignorance, indifference, lack of vision, and self centered mendacity.

For their embrace of bigotry, hate based ideology, cruelty and pure evil.

For their negligence. For their failure to rise to the challenge.

Democracy and the principles we CLAIM it stands for, isn't a given. It doesn't run on autopilot.

It must be MAINTAINED, looked after and well cared for. It must be nurtured and PROTECTED, else it'll rot to the core.

EVIL NEVER SLEEPS.

But she had everything going against her, and yet look how far she came. Black, Indian, AND a woman. I honestly wonder if this country will ever get over its misogyny and hatred towards women. At least we came together once to elect an honest politician for this age, who happened to be black. We thought we'd broken down a barrier then... I remember my Mom and I crying with joy at his inauguration. Mom died before she could see a female prez. I figure, it'll be the same way for me, too.

We got the scummy piece of shit we voted for. My only regret is many who voted for Harris will suffer at the hands of this tyrant. But the nation voted for a complete piece of shit for President. That's the truth. Harris didn't lose to John McCain or Mitt Romney, she lost to DOnal fucking Trump, one of the worst humans on the planet. Maybe we do deserve the shit he's unleashing so maybe we won't repeat it again.

For her rise through California state politics. It is impressive.

But it’s assuming a lot that she would have won the primary, had it been open.

I think there’s enough blame to go around. I won’t say where I place most of it, because it’s pretty much “let’s not talk about Bruno” at this point.

Kamala Harris herself will be fine, whether or not her political career is over.

It was never about her. It was about the American people, Constitutional rights & rule of law, a media which has failed to adequately inform voters, an educational system which does not produce enough good citizens, political & economic systems dominated by obscene wealth, and taking action to protect the natural environment which sustains life itself.
