But now that it's being canceled, I view it as "must see tv" for the duration.
Kinda like wanting to read a book that some want to ban.

(19,417 posts)Its on CBS which anyone can watch with an antenna.

(25,243 posts)within range of a CBS station to get it. I can only get a few channels with an antenna. For most folks doing cord cutting, it means less eyeballs for ABC, NBC, CBS, and probably PBS. Maybe that's why the Rethugs could get away with cutting funding for the latter.

(536 posts)The company that maintained the areas antenna tower Decided to stop doing so, leaving people on slim budgets without a way of accessing anything. I cut cable, out of necessity, but had hoped to at least get a few channels from antenna. It was far from great reception but over the years I would use it as a backup when my cable went out and would have been willing to pay a few dollars monthly for the 5-6 channels our area got. Unfortunately they never even considered offering that as an option to keep it going.

(935 posts)fewer affiliates up until around the mid '70s so in some rural areas it had to be seen on a UHF channel. Of course, I'm talking about analog broadcasting - maybe it's different now that they broadcast in digital.

(25,243 posts)but it would seem to me that the only markets that would have put in digital transmitters would have been in the more urban markets. Rural stations just wouldn't have the audience or advertiser base needed to finance new equipment in some cases, no doubt.

(19,417 posts)Minutiae aside, the bottom line is this for most people it can be seen via antenna. Thanks though.

(42,103 posts)Unless you live within about 20 miles of a transmitter cluster, "rabbit ears" won't do you much good, even if amplified.
In most areas, the way to go is an outdoor yagi on a 20-foot (or higher) mast with a rotor, run through a signal amplifier of at least 15 dB. That's about $250-$300 in gear, and maybe that much again if you have to hire someone to install it. And even then, reception is subject to the terrain between you and the transmitter.

(25,488 posts)watch or record. I am guessing that I am just turned off by network TV seemingly always in someone's face on what to watch, etc.
Now, I watch YouTube almost 95% of the time, I get to pick what I want to watch when I want to watch it. I have tried getting back into the routine of watching a regularly scheduled tv show but just can't not go back to it again.
There's something to be said about YouTube and watching the TV that you wish to watch.
The Ratings BS that they have annually or so, so what and who cares? Maybe I'm showing off my independence finally and watching 100% of what I want to watch, nonstop.
I will miss Colbert though, I did think that he was one of the better show hosts, and had a verbal wit about him that was unmatched. I imagine that we'll see him again in the future, or at least I hope so, he's too talented to waste such talent and knowledge.

(2,768 posts)Colbear a bit too dry, and too many of his jokes go over my head. Clunkers now and then, but overall humorous enough and a trump detractor so OK enough. C+.
Jimmy Fallon is little more than a shouting HAM, both on his late night as well as other celebrity shows he is on, and just about wherever he goes. He also had that kerfuffle with his staff.
Fallon's monologue is usually so stupid and unfunny; I used to watch and rarely did I even crack a smile while constantly groaning and rolling eyes. His 'notable names', name after name, being lead-ins for some inane attempt to be funny need to be banned, they are idiotic. He has a live audience but I am sure they are coaxed by flashing signs to applaud and cheer at most all he says, and I also think this is supplemented by canned laughter, for some of of the idiotic things he says should not get such tremendous support.
Sure Fallon mocks trump but he also mocked Biden with pathetic 'he knew Abe Lincoln' style jokes.
Utter failure F.
PS: does Fallon's band Roots know any tune other than hey hey hey, and 'get involved'?
Seth Meyers is pretty good, sharp but goes off on silly tangents and parts are clunkers, B+.
Jimmy Kimmel the best and brightest A. Sadly I read today 2025 or 26 will be his last year, as well as Colbear. Je ne parle pas francais, colbert.

(569 posts)The show lost a ton of money with only 250,000 people in the chosen demographic watching. It is what it is. Getting in the air slamming your boss probably just sped up the cancellation.

(35,982 posts)Johnny Carson had much higher ratings, but TV has changed since those days. Now we have many more channels and choices.

The television in our house hasn't had channels since we disconnected the antenna in 2012. We quit cable more than twenty years ago.
Mostly we watch DVDs, Netflix, and one or two additional no-advertising streaming services at any given time.
I blame "traditional" television for creating the fuckwit king. For that it cannot be forgiven.
Both Colbert and Rachel Maddow are compromised by working for the devil. It will be interesting to see what Colbert does now that he's been cut loose.

(42,103 posts)It's likely to be a repeat of a show from two weeks to a month ago. I'd be surprised if these guys work more than 150 days per year.

(45,455 posts)So around 150/year isn't a bad guess. In early years, Colbert did more shows --over 200 in 2016. The number also is skewed somewhat by 2020 -2021, when Covid had an impact on the number of shows.
By way of comparison, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson averaged over 220 episodes a year; however, in the later years of its run, Carson was replaced by a guest host -- most often Jay Leno -- quite a bit. In fact, in the show's penultimate season, Leno guested on over one-third of the 190 or so episodes.

(42,103 posts)is topical humor, reruns are like death. If i turn on Colbert and right away he's riffing on something The Felon did two weeks to a month ago -- which has happened many times -- I'm changing channels. Maybe most people don't; I dunno.
I prefer Kimmel, anyway, because he doesn't mug for the camera. But my parner likes Colbert -- or, used to. For the last year or so, she's always working on music around 11:30 p.m.

(45,455 posts)Kimmel's monologue often starts with political oriented material. They both take every friday off and run a repeat. As of this week, I think Colbert has aired only five fewer original episodes than Kimmel, so I don't see much difference there.
