LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — It’s a story 8,000 miles in the making.

The remains of Pvt. Erwin Schopp — affectionately nicknamed “Bud” by his mother — were returned to a cemetery in Plymouth, Nebraska on Friday after being missing in the Philippines for more than eight decades.

“To remember before god our brother Bud, to give thanks for his life and to commend him to our merciful redeemer,” opened Rev. Suzanne How, Sgt. Maj. USMC (Ret.), who officiated the ceremony.

The Schopps were a staple of the Plymouth community.
