Israeli forces launch ground and air assault on Deir al-Balah, Gaza

Israeli forces have launched a ground and air assault on the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, prompting fresh waves of displacement among civilians already uprooted by the ongoing conflict.

The operation began early on Monday, just hours after the Israeli military issued evacuation warnings to residents of six residential blocks in the south-western part of the city.

The area is currently packed with thousands of displaced people from Rafah and Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.

Local journalists told the BBC that Israeli tanks and military vehicles pushed into the city from the Kisufim checkpoint under heavy artillery and air cover.

The UN's humanitarian office, Ocha, said the displacement order issued by the Israeli military on Sunday - before today's assault began - was "yet another devastating blow" to humanitarian efforts in Gaza.

It said there were dozens of important resources such as humanitarian warehouses, medical clinics and critical water infrastructure in Deir al-Balah.

"Any damage to this infrastructure will have life-threatening consequences," it warned.

The new order "cuts through Deir al-Balah... further splintering the Strip," Ocha said, adding that it will limit the ability of its humanitarian teams to move safely and effectively in Gaza.

In the words of the former Israeli Defense Minister, those are the roles of the IDF now. I venture to add that's been clear since the beginning for those who wanted to see beyond the propaganda.

And BBC Verify identified dozens of adverts posted to Israeli Facebook groups which were offering work in Gaza to demolition contractors. The majority of the posts have been shared by recruiters since May.

"Wanted: Experienced wheeled excavator operator for the Gaza border area. Work is Sunday to Thursday, 07:00 to 16:45. Great working conditions. Own transportation required".

Surpassed only by Nagasaki/Hiroshima of course but what does that say?

In act I read that the combined explosive firepower on Gaza now equals twice that unleashed on one or both of those cities, I don't recall exactly.

They don't even bother with the "human shields" BS anymore because of course that was always just a pretext for the systematic destruction. It's all out in the open now. Destination ethnic cleansing.

"Great working conditions"? These buildings are being destroyed by both bulldozers and bombs. If one enjoys clearing human bodies from the rubble, then I suppose they would like the working conditions. I guess as long as the pay (and the pay-off) is good, all else can be overlooked, right?

A maternity hospital? Of course...
