Coca-Cola to release soda with cane sugar after Trump pushed for it. Is it really better than high-fructose corn syrup?

Coca-Cola announced on Tuesday that it will release a new version of Coke using cane sugar later this year.

“As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range,” Coca-Cola said in a press release reporting its second quarter earnings. “This addition is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences.”

The announcement came days after President Trump said in a social media post that the company had agreed with him to do so.

“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last week. “I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”

Does this mean slobfather will now forsake Diet Coke?

I don’t know if Asia uses as much glyphosate on their sugar crop as US does. Louisiana & Florida spray Roundup as a desiccant right before harvest for crop to dry more evenly and for the sugar to be sweeter. Roundup has gotten into waterways and can cause algae and red tide.

I only buy organic sugar but I do love Mexican cokes.

Aluminum cans are now lined in plastic so the coke in cans can pick up small amts of BPA if canned coke is stored at high temps, is old or dented. From long term BPA exposure you can have hormonal dis regulation.

However, I like the taste better & living in NM, almost every store carries it. Walmart carries a six pack of tiny glass cokes but they have corn syrup.

Corn subsidies are ridiculous. I’m sure Iowa’s first in the nation caucus status and the big-ag corn lobby had nothing to do with it.

As for the health effects, high frustose corn syrup has a slightly higher glycemic index than cane sugar. Neither are healthy but HFCS will lead to a more rapid spike.

Cane sugar is already 45% fructose. It's a disacharride that 55% dextrose & 45% fructose.
So, it's not a total solution to the glycemic concern.

First, can sugar is 45% fructose. So, the issues with fructose don't go away by converting to sucrose.
Second, and more concerning, is that fructose is about 50% sweeter than sucrose.
So, does replacing HFCS with cane sugar mean they'll be adding more total sugar?

Not worth getting into here (and it was trade secret at the time, maybe still is), but I recall there is more phosphoric acid in Coke, too.
That adds some tartness, so it was never going to taste as sweet.

When the HFCS was created, corn was corn. Simple corn. Tested safe.
Now that corn has been bred for ethanol gas and then that was used for HFCS, was the safety retested?
But then corn was rebred to be immune to Roundup and then used to make HFCVS, was the safety retested?
Then corn was rebred to be immune to pests and then used to make HFCS, was the safety retested?

Thus higher profits, better positioned to compete, etc.

But since Mexican Coke is made with sugar and starting to make inroads into the USA, think they are realizing in Atlanta, some people would rather pay a premium for the sugar version. Plus consumption of soda has gone down. Instead of giant two litters, more are buying the one, cans, 20 oz six pack, etc.

Give the market what it wants.

documents how high fructose corn syrup replaced sugar in products and why. It was driven especially by big agribusiness who wanted to boost their corn being used (and likewise being the main ingredient to fatten up cattle). There are some serious environmental issues with this cycle as well as high fructose corn syrup in its concentrations possibly leading to higher obesity. So in terms of this, yes it is important-- although remember we still consume way too much sugar and similar sweeteners in our diet. And thanks to pushes from big agribusiness and the predominance of high fructose corn syrup, sugar is no longer grown/farmed in the United States (Hawaii stopped in 2019. That was the last time U.S. grew sugar). So this leads to sugar being an import and thus tariffs. Meanwhile, we have a farming industry that uses immigrant/migrant labor that also would be impacted in different ways. So economically, it's not beneficial at this time. Also, how much will the pure cane sugar coke cost? And would certain other ingredients be revisited? I doubt that, and then as high fructose corn syrup is considered to be "ultra sweetened" how many grams of the pure cane sugar would be in the can/bottle of coke? I suspect more than the grams of sugar currently in Mexican coke. Call it a hunch.

Anyway, this is just a distraction, likely borrowed to also hide the preposterous things as laying off important food safety regulations, personnel, etc., so hopefully the Coca Cola industry will make sure these cans/bottles are "safe"-- as we would have to rely on the company's good intentions.

So I'm not impressed with this move. It's NOT part of a big picture where we become healthier. Michelle Obama is still a better spokesperson than RFK Jr. that's for sure.

The conclusion was that sugar is the healthier sweetener compared to HFCS.

I went in for a checkup and they found that my ferritan levels were sky high. After months of testing (it was hard to get appointments during the pandemic) and seeing a liver specialist, the ruled out cancer but did detect that I have NAFLD. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease. An affliction that I apparently share with millions of Americans. Had it not been for the other issue, I would have never known. The liver has no nerves and you don't feel pain with liver disease. NAFLD can leaad to a number of bad health issues including cirrhosis of the liver and cardiovascular issues. In May of 2024 I went in for a physical and it was a wake up call. I had been pre-diabetic but my A1C had climbed to 6.4. I was significantly overweight largely due to eating a lot of take out fast food during the pandemic. I started the keto diet and cut out sugar and limit my carbohydrate intake to a small amount. I've dropped about 90lbs and my health has improved considerably. In March my A1C had dropped 10 points down to 5.4 and my blood pressure has dropped considerably. I suspect my doctor may have me drop the BP medication that I take. Another thing that happened was thst some skin conditions that I had cleared up. I had some skin tags on my temples and small psoriatic skin patches near each knee. They have both cleared up. Ive read the insulin resistivity can cause those issues. I also had an inflammed abdomen that prompted my doctor to schedule some ultrasounds for my liver and pancreas again. After dropping 90lbs and modifying my diet the inflammation is gone. I wont drink soda again, diet or otherwise. Most of the artificial sweeteners have issues as well. The only sweetener that I have on hand is liquid monkfruit but I rarely even use that.

It shifts the sales of Mexican imports to US domestically produced and bottled. So this is good. High fructose corn syrup has been known to be the devil for years and is not processed by the body the same. It’s crazy to say now that high fructose corn syrup is somehow better than pure sugar.
