Another day - another lie

A few days ago the cops beat up some protesters on a bridge in Cincinnati. It is a hot topic, especially here at the senior village.

Very few here support what is happening with ICE.... even among those who generally lean right. Though to be fair, we aren't big on political discussions and I do my best to avoid the few known MAGAs.

But tonight a few of us in the game room with news on in the background. I mentioned what we need is a new "John Lewis". It opened the door... stupid me.

Took no time at all for one of them to start blathering away about "doing it the right way" and "go back home and get in the back of the line". So in the most sincere way I could, I reminded him that people are being arrested after keeping their immigration appointments and getting renewed. They ARE doing it the right way. I asked what is the logic there?

What I got was a word salad that not even Sarah Palin could figure out. Finally another man at the table just sadly shook his head and quietly told the MAGA, at some point you will have to face the fact "doing it the right way" is a lie.

MAGA neighbor himhawed around some and we changed the subject. He got kind of quiet ... thoughtful like. It was a rare respectful short conversation.

Maybe I am too gullable, but I think for one MAGA in one moment, we lit a candle. Maybe.

... have invested so many years and so much of their identity in defending Trump, those doubts are shoved down almost as soon as they emerge. But that takes a lot of effort. For some, those doubts are gaining a foothold. And even simple conversations like the one you had help the process along.

Food for thought on understanding the cult and some closing advice from Jayne Converse in this short 5 min video:

....Shame is too powerful, so they double-down, like trump does. Some trump supporters know deep down they've been conned. They've seen the cruelty, the corruption, the chaos, but they've already invested years of their indentity into defending him. To walk away now would mean confronting shame, losing their community, admitting they were wrong. And that is terrifying to them. So instead, they dig in deeper...

Not everyone in that cult is unreachable. Some are too far gone. Some are on the edge. Quiet. Doubting. Hurting. We don't get them back with facts. We get them back by offering something Trump never will: real community, real care, and real solutions... Offer people a way out that doesn't begin with shame, but with dignity... This fight isn't just about defeating Trump. It's about breaking the spell and building something better in its place.
