UN secretary general warns last lifelines may soon collapse after Israeli forces attack WHO facilities in Deir al-BalahSource: The Guardian
An angry chorus of senior figures, among them the UK foreign secretary, David Lammy, and a senior Catholic cleric, expressed on Tuesday a growing sense of global horror over Israels actions.
I spoke again with [the Israeli foreign minister] Gideon Saar to recall our understanding on aid flow and made clear that IDF [Israel Defense Forces] must stop killing people at distribution points, the EUs foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, wrote on X. The killing of civilians seeking aid in Gaza is indefensible.
She said all options were on the table if Israel does not deliver on aid pledges, but did not say what those options included.

Guterres comments came hours after a hard-hitting joint statement on Monday by 27 western countries including the UK, France, Australia and Canada harshly criticising Israels restrictions on humanitarian aid and calling for an immediate end to the war.

People, including babies and children, are dying from organ failure caused by starvation - at alarmingly accelerating rates over the last few days. Even doctors and medical staff are fainting on the job from hunger and exhaustion. A quarter of the population is facing near-famine with over 100,000 women and children at acute severe malnutrition. The last hope for salvation is being destroyed by Israeli forces: the critical humanitarian infrastructure at Deir al-Balah, including the WHO buildings destroyed in the last day.
Over a thousand people now have been butchered trying to get a sack of flour.
None of this is by accident.
Do the leaders of those 27 western countries that issues the joint "hard-hitting" statement yesterday have any intention of upholding their duties to prevent genocide under the Genocide Convention? Is that one of the "options" the EU has promised?
I suspect whatever option these "leaders" choose, it will be too little, too late. Any reckoning coming to them will not matter to those who have died and will die and the many more suffering agonies due to their inaction and/or complicity.

(3,312 posts)It's been a bit shadowy and hard to pin down. Some of the funding even bypassed Congress.
The annual funding, aside from the war, and ongoing, is around 3.5 billion, I believe.
Historically, Israel is the largest recipient of US foreign aid. Somewhere around $300 billion to date.
All funds should be cut now, no more arms either. Though we know the US won't, other countries might. Canada has, at least the transfer of arms.

(23,093 posts)And then it was pockets of armed resistance for several months after that. But now it is simply an extermination, there is no real armed resistance anymore, just the occasional 2 or 3 fighters with some guns that get bombed quickly or the occasional rocket attack that has no chance of landing in Israel and causing much damage.
At least we don't have to guess what the long term plan is anymore, BiBi and Trump have publicly stated their exact plan, to kill or eject 100% of the people that live in Gaza and take their land for their rich real estate developer friends to turn into a resort town. People can talk about cease fires, and I am sure there will be some cease fires, but they will be brief because the end goal is the total annihilation of Gaza and all of its people.
Gaza was lost the day Trump won the election. My fear is that the West Bank is next.

(3,312 posts)It's why I always put it in quotes.
In a war, the civilian population has a military with army, air force, bases etc to PROTECT it. Gaza had nothing. AK-47s and RPGs vs jets, tanks, 2000 lb bombs and a well-equipped force 10 times larger. With that off-the charts asymettry, it was really guerilla warfare against an insurmountable enemy, with civilians paying the price. It's why the casualty ratio is about 130:1. Most of that 130 are civilians vs 1 IDF soldier. It's slaughter.

(13,090 posts)Civilian population has no armies. It is the belligerent combatants that have armies. Their relative military strength is irrelevant as long as they engage in combat. Assymetry is irrelevant to it being a war as long as none of them surrender. Casualties, both military and civilian, is irrelevan to it being a war as long as at least one of the belligerents hides and attacks from civilian areas.
Save your quotation marks for when you use terms like "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing".

If there is no Palestinian military, why does Palestinian military refuse to disarm and release the hostages?

(3,312 posts)Or have a vacation home in a land with poisoned air, soil and water. Not to mention the forever-stigma where a genocide occurred and the natives were expelled. It might be too much shame, even for the shameless.
In any case the clean-up will take decades. There are much better playgrounds in the world.
I think this is about a number of Israel's interests, not that of the rich. Israelis will never forgive Palestinians for Oct 7th and as collective punishment, and for their perceived security, 82% of them want Gazans expelled, per a recent poll. Also, Likud has always had the goal of establishing Israeli sovereignty "from the Jordan to the Mediterranean" - it's in its charter (not as catchy as "from the river to the sea" but the same). This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put the final nails in the coffin of the two-state solution and I believe the entire "war" was conducted from the start to result in the ethnic cleansing of these unfortunate people.

(3,312 posts)By that I mean Trump and Netanyahu. Though both are likely to profit off Gaza's unexploited offshore gas fields, a figure of half a TRILLION dollars as I recall. But Gaza itself will be Israel's. Likud is increasingly controlled by the settler movement and those religious nuts want to return to Gaza, it's a holy mission for them. They already have plots selected.
Don't let the "Gaza Riviera" distraction fool you.

Israel says humanitarian aid is being allowed into Gaza and accuses Hamas of exploiting civilian suffering, including by stealing food handouts to sell at inflated prices or shooting at those awaiting aid.
In their statement, the humanitarian organisations said that warehouses with tonnes of supplies were sitting untouched just outside the territory, and even inside, as they were blocked from accessing or delivering the goods.

(3,312 posts)These journalists work for the AFP, so they are more "priviledged" than ordinary Gazans without income. Yet what they describe is clearly the result of enduring, severe starvation. Ordinary Gazans have no voice so we can only imagine the greater suffering they and their children endure.
Palestinian text, photo, and video journalists working for the international news agency described desperate hunger and a lack of clean water that have left many ill and exhausted, forcing some to cut back their coverage as the war enters its 22nd month. One journalist summed up the crisis bluntly: they have "no energy left due to hunger."

Bashar Taleb, 35, one of four AFP photographers in Gaza shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize earlier this year, lives amid the bombed-out ruins of his home in Jabalia al-Nazla, northern Gaza. He said he has had to stop working multiple times to search for food for his family and loved ones and admitted feeling "utterly defeated emotionally" for the first time.
"I've tried so much, knocked on many doors to save my family from starvation, constant displacement and persistent fear, but so far to no avail," he added.
Another Pulitzer nominee, Omar al-Qattaa, 35, is staying in the remains of his wife's family home after his apartment was destroyed. "I'm exhausted from carrying heavy cameras on my shoulders and walking long distances," he said. "We can't even reach coverage sites because we have no energy left due to hunger and lack of food."

There ain't a veteran

Let's talk about dead people
I mean a dead people
The dead don't feel honor
They don't feel that brave
They don't feel avenged
They're lucky if they got graves
Call your dead mother
Ask her when she died
It's a deathly silence on the other line
The dead don't talk
But their children don't forget
So in 20 short years
You can live to regret that
War isn't murder
There's money at stake
Hell, even Kushner agrees
It's good real estate
War isn't murder
Ask Netanyahu
He's got a psalm for that
He's got a bomb for you
War isn't murder
It's an old desert faith
It's a nation state sanctioned righteous hate
Let's talk about dead people
I mean a dead people
War isn't murder
It's the vengeance of God

They don't bloat when they rot
And the flies don't swarm
And the children don't cry
If war isn't murder
Good men don't die
So in a short 20 years

Try not and think about the dead
And have a nice trip
War isn't murder
Let's all give thanks
I saw it all in a movie

Over 100 aid groups and human rights watchdogs have condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, laying blame on Israel and the Israeli government-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) for the dire situation there.
The Gaza Strip has a population of around 2 million people and faces a critical shortage of food, water, medicine and other essential goods.
"Exactly two months since the Israeli government-controlled scheme, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, began operating," the aid groups said in a statement. "109 organizations are sounding the alarm, urging governments to act."
Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Save the Children International, Oxfam, the Norwegian Refugee Council and others made a call to "open all land crossings; restore the full flow of food, clean water, medical supplies, shelter items and fuel through a principled, UN-led mechanism; end the siege, and agree to a ceasefire now."
