Stefanik closer to run for NY governor after Lawler decides to stay put
Democrats wasted no time in responding to Lawler’s decision, framing it as evidence that he wasn’t well-positioned to defeat Hochul next year.


Stefanik hasn’t formally declared her candidacy against Hochul, who is seeking reelection to a second full term next year. That announcement won’t come until after this year’s elections, she said in a statement released Wednesday morning after Lawler's announcement.

“I am focused on supporting strong Republican local and county candidates on the ballot this November to lay the groundwork with a strong team for next year,” Stefanik said. “I will make a final decision and announcement after this year’s November election which we are all focused on.”
