MN-GOV: Gov. Tim Walz Delays Re-Election Announcement Until After State Fair

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KWAD)— Minnesota voters eager to learn whether Gov. Tim Walz will seek a third term in 2026 will have to wait until after the State Fair, the governor confirmed this week.

Speaking with reporters, Walz said he plans to announce his decision following Labor Day, once the Great Minnesota Get-Together wraps up. He also cited the recent assassination of longtime friend and political ally, state Rep. Melissa Hortman, as a reason for taking time for personal reflection before making a formal decision.

In a separate interview with Axios, Walz clarified that if he chooses to run for governor again in 2026, he will not run for president in 2028.

While Walz has not officially declared his intentions, he has dropped strong hints that he’s leaning toward another campaign. Back in April, during a Star Tribune event, he said he was “raising the necessary resources to run for re-election.” More recently, he told the paper he’s confident he would win if he does choose to run.
