General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWelp, MAHER took a lousy shot at COLBERT in tonight's "Overtime".
*** No need for feverish declarations about hating MAHER, thanks. My position is what a DUer said about Tweety (Chris MATTHEWS, for the younguns), " *WHEN* he's on our side there's nobody better." Please let this topic run its course which will be BRIEF without any help from the feverish declarations of MAHER-hate, really *thanks*.
*** So the premise was an item that there's a Saudi event featuring COMEDIANS (being paid tons), and MAHER said that, wow, some of the participants are friends of his - mentioned only Bill BURR, Whitney CUMMINGS, the C.K. one.
So, when he finished up, he threw in, (paraphrasing) "Maybe COLBERT can get a job over there."
Now, over the years I've seen a couple of clips of MAHER-COLBERT in which they (or rather MAHER) clashed, and what I saw was about Stephen's sincere Catholicism vs MAHER's atheism. But then later I saw a clip of MAHER saying that he deeply detests COLBERT, specifically saying that "he's had success because he gave corporate media what they wanted" (paraphrase), which, since now-years later we've seen corporate kissing KRASNOV's ass and ditching COLBERT, is far from correct, just MAHER's personal animosity.
My own personal disappointments of participating in this event: BURR, JEFFRIES, SANTINO/LEE, IGLESIAS.
*** O.K. let the MAHER fire bombing proceed.

(67,529 posts)... Dennis Miller. That said: if that's all Maher's got on Colbert, it's mighty underwhelming.

The others are looking max sold out.
Coventina
(28,580 posts)That dates back to at least the 1930s.
One of my great-great uncles (brother of my great grandfather) went to KSA to help build the oil fields (he was a pipe fitter).
He had to bring his certificate of baptism to prove he was Christian and not Jewish.

It's so bad, my husband had two valid passports at one time.
One, he had visited Israel with, and so he had visas and stamps for Israel.
KSA won't even let someone who has VISITED Israel in the country!
So he had to apply for a second passport that was "clean."

That was the joke, that someone recently fired might need a job, need money.
UTUSN
(75,330 posts)I "saw" (on his show, videos) say that he has literal contempt for COLBERT's career choices, which means resentment for succeeding on the network where MAHER was cancelled from a network.
I can concede that the comment was framed as a mild joke but he was *gloating* over COLBERT's being offed from a network show, the way MAHER has whined forever about his Politically Correct being offed from ABC. It's generous of you to give MAHER the benefit of being sympathetic to "someone" needing job/money, but my strong assurance is that it was *very* personal and gloating. He said it with a little smirk. As for being "fired," he wasn't as COLBERT said, not "replaced." The whole show was cancelled. And there is no quesiton that COLBERT will have a totally successful rest of his life and career.
The YouTube is out there easy to find, "Overtime". I didn't and won't post it because there are tons of threads here about blanket-hating MAHER and it's at the point that that contingent seems to consider him taboo on DU. I don't defend him, and dislike the parts of him that give comfort to MAGAts, but one of our Lib characteristics is to look within to find improvement and the parts of him that irritate his blanket-haters come under the heading of constructive criticism for correcting wrong strategies and pointing to improving chances of winning.

(882 posts)Has everybody forgotten why he ended up on HBO to begin with? He had a late night show on ABC (Politically Incorrect) and was cancelled after he made a joke about the 9/11 attacks. Many believed it was too soon and after the outcry he was cancelled. You would think, with that history, that he could commiserate with and support Colbert instead of attacking him.
SocialDemocrat61
(5,458 posts)And he didn't make a joke, it was a statement, "We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2000 miles away, that's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, not cowardly."

(75,330 posts)It also gets tiresome to whackamole every time a blanket-hate in the MAHER category pops up. I don't mind reasonable give and take but "F**K (whomever)" and "I turn off if I see the name of (whomever)" and preaching to others about their topic choices (that don't break DU rules) contribute nothing to a topic. I do blanket-hates on MAGAts and KRASNOV, and I am not opening the door here to a new topic of whether he is a MAGAt or not. And if I don't like a thread I go my way and let whoever wants to participate in it do so in having their space without having to put up with my declaring to the world what my personal peeve is.
and a few here have scripts that they puke every time. I get that there's a lot of easy criticisms of Maher and he's an ass, but ffs people.
