Big DOGE blunder could require everyone be assigned a new Social Security number: report

By Travis Gettys
Published August 27, 2025 8:31AM ET

CNN's Matt Egan highlighted a stunning claim made in a whistleblower complaint filed by a high-ranking official in the Social Security Administration that could impact more than 300 million Americans.

The agency's chief data officer Chuck Borges alleges that DOGE staffers, including 19-year-old Edward "Big Balls" Coristine, uploaded a copy of all federal Social Security numbers and other highly sensitive information to an unsecured server in June, which he said posed an enormous risk to every American invested in the system.

"We knew that DOGE was taking its 'move fast, break things' attitude to the federal government," Egan told "CNN News Central." "Now we're learning more about some of the potential consequences there, and this stunning whistleblower complaint. It's not coming from some low-level employee or some intern, this is coming from the chief data officer at the Social Security Administration, a.k.a. someone who would know. Now in this 18-page complaint, he alleges that among the critical data that was stored in this vulnerable cloud server, it includes people's names, their Social Security numbers, dates of birth, their addresses, citizenship status, even their parents' names – all of it stored in this cloud server."

https://www.law.cornell.edu/rules/frcp/rule_23 One of the requirements is that the class has to be manageable. If the class in this case would consist of everybody with a Social Security number, it would probably be pretty unmanageable.

They were clearly violating the Privacy Act of 1974, as well as the privacy parameters in the original language of the bill. making Social Security law, in 1935.

Between the multiple credit agencies, and the hospitals which were hacked, that alone is enough to have over half of our info. The one credit agency had like 150 million hostages, err customers, information hacked alone. I think they offered 1 year of credit monitoring. Seems kind of, pointless? They lost our social security numbers to hackers for life, but here is 1 year of credit monitoring (from them mind you). This country is so stupid.

Maybe the data was exposed. Of course if the idiots had proper security with logging we could say for sure, but it's kind of wait and hope situation. Although as noted by another poster much of this is already available and we really probably should do a new Social Security number or similar but with better security. Too many other areas have used that number for other things. But that's unlikely to happen barring an absolute disaster because companies can offer us a year of credit report watching and security is hard.

Possibly. But also possible that they wanted to destroy the Social Security system, claiming no one is who they claim to be, and not issuing valid SS numbers ... and then require the "new" SS numbers to become eligible to vote.

They would bungle it or worse use that opportunity to deny it to people such as those of us naturalized citizens. They would find excuses to say it needs to be investigated to make sure we are true Americans. Same thing could happen to older African Americans. Many, especially in rural areas cannot easily produce a birth certificate. They were born at home, the birth was not recorded, especially during Jim Crow.

I've had the same SSN since I was fifteen, 51 years now. I had to get it to get dental care at the UNC dental school. Everything I've ever done, including serving four years in the USAF, is tied to that number.

Idiot MAGA fuckups. We'll never get all of their stupid shit straightened out.
