I'm sure we all notice

how the media has more or less stopped talking about Epstein. DOJ last week releases to Congress a bunch of stuff that is mostly public record. No media outrage. Just more or less acceptance. Convicted felon, sexual offender, business cheat, habitually bankrupt both financially and morally, snuggler to people committing sex crimes involving underage females, grifter using his elected office to extort money for himself and friends all over the world, callous cruelty, bigotry on display.

All of this and yet the major media treats this all as just something being "observed" like it's "just another day", "calling balls and strikes" and they're waiting for another story to come along. Another ambulance to chase or grieving parent to shove a microphone at and say "Tell us how you feel."

Those of us who lived through the latter part of the Watergate scandal with Nixon saw a media that was relentless, rightly so, and made this a major focus day after day. We saw the media focus relentlessly on Jimmy Carter when the Iran Hostage Crisis happened.
Ted Koppel every night on "NIghtline" telling us that it was "Iranian Hostage Crisis Day number such and such". We don't see anybody in media starting off every nightly program with "Epstein Coverup.....Day number.....".

"And so it goes" was the sign-off by Linda Ellerbee and Lloyd Dobyns after they would lay out some truth on our TV screens. Big media won't allow programs like "Weekend" or "NBC News Overnight". The bosses get more pressure than their lack of spine can overcome. So now we get a media that accepts a press conference where a spokesperson lies to their face and denigrates them. They accept this out of some fear or worship while many of us remember Helen Thomas and her relentless push-back against propaganda and spin. Helen Thomas would have been physically removed from the White House Press Room by the current fascist regime.

What we have now is a New York Times that dutifully notes the destruction of our democracy and the immense grift as though they are reciting a grocery list. A Washington Post that didn't even bother with a funeral for its credibility. We have Maddow but the attack is on against her and the maneuvering to diminish her began long ago. We have John Oliver for those with HBO.

But late at night as millions of us sit up in the wee hours of the morning we remember Ellerbee and Dobyns and seeing reports nobody else dared to do about our prisons, our migrants in the fields, our indigenous peoples, chemical plants etc. So I'll go to work today, after being up in the wee hours again, and know what is missing, how it was and a time when it could be. And so it goes.

1. He's a republicon golf cheat, too. Don't forget.

Damn low. Corporate media just "fine" with his fundamental dishonesty.

It says something special about the republicons that they are only too happy to applaud and praise an a-hole who cheats his so-called "friends" frequently at a game of golf. All the time.

3. This is an area where we can do something. Keep talking about it.

Bring it up often on every social media you belong to. Watch videos on YouTube and TikTok whenever they come up to raise them up in the algorithm. Click on any articles you see that deal with Epstein.

I'm hoping the victim's press conference on September 2 brings it all roaring back.

Because this is the thing that can take him down. He has told us that in a thousand ways.

5. Do you really think this Epstein thing can bring him down?

I am not sure it would. I used to think so but not now. How would it bring him down? Would he resign? I doubt it. Impeachment? Doubt he would be convicted with this Senate. I see him losing some of his base, but that’s all. That would be good, don’t get me wrong, but would that be enough to bring him down? I want him gone as much as anyone, but I’m not sure this would do it. I hope I am wrong.

7. Every move Taco makes with respect to the Epstein files SCREAMS that this is something he fears profoundly.

The damage being done by not releasing the files is enormous. His poll numbers are plummeting.

His actions tell us that the damage would be exponentially worse if he DID release the files.

Child trafficking is the one thing that his base will not forgive. It is the one thing that would remove his magical aura.

Yes. I am convinced this will take him down, both because of his reactions around it and because of what we know about how republicans think.

4. Most media in this country is owned by the oligarchs.

It was Dubya the frat boy who made Helen Thomas sit at the back of the room instead of the front row at press conferences.

We saw 24/7/365 days of nonstop "news" about Clinton and Monica. We saw nonstop news about Biden's one poor performance in a debate.

I don't watch TV news. I gave that up the first time this idiot was in office. I haven't had cable for 18 years.

6. Our American exceptionalism is on full display.

Only it is the few, whose brilliance we tried to share, that made it so. We allowed the world to reengineer our technology, we worked on rescue rather than preemptive attack.
The power was in the decision makers who contemplated the impact of those decisions.
Many mistakes have been made, but we believed in our best intentions.
But now we allowed those with self serving ideologies to have the power of modernity. Sadly, self management and decorum have been replaced by imposition of personal ideologies seeking identity.
They found it.
The cat is out of the bag.
Have not figured how to get the cat close to the bag, nevermind, in.
We are on a Nantucket Sleigh Ride and hope we don't get completely stove.
