Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow crazy is it that Trump tried to do what caused the people of this land to rebel and fight a war of independence?
...after the British rulers decided to pick and choose who was exempt from their tariffs.
They imposed the Stamp Act and the Intolerable Acts, or Coercive Acts, which, among other provisions, ended local self-government in Massachusetts and closed Boston's commerce.
They also imposed the Townsend Acts which included:
The Revenue Act 1767 passed on 29 June 1767.
The Commissioners of Customs Act 1767 passed on 29 June 1767.
The Indemnity Act 1767 passed on 2 July 1767.
The New York Restraining Act 1767 passed on 2 July 1767.
The Vice Admiralty Court Act 1768 passed on 8 March 1768.
All hell broke loose when they exempted the East India Company from tariffs on China tea sold in the colonies.
Can you imagine their reaction to what Trump has done here, roiling decades of understanding about imperial power raising revenue from the people without the consent of the people.
Taxation without representation, in effect.
To the harbor!

(92,567 posts)It was a tax, that too on tea from China, that led to US independence
With eye on China, President Trump has led the US into a tariff war. However, it was the issue of tax on a Chinese export, tea, that sparked the American Revolution, which ultimately led to the independence of the US from Britain. Yes, we are referring to the Boston Tea Party of 1773 when Chinese tea was dumped into the Atlantic Ocean.
Centuries before made-in-China electronics and toys flooded the American market, prompting US President Donald Trump to resort to a trade war, it was tea from China that lit the fuse. In fact, it was the waiver of what can be considered import tax on Chinese tea that triggered the American Revolutionary War, which ultimately led to the formation of the US.
The irony? Chinese produce, once a catalyst for American Independence, is now at the centre of Trump's trade battles with China. Trump's China tariffs have sent shockwaves through the global economy, striking India particularly hard.
