BREAKING: At least 250 people are dead and 500 injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan

At least 250 killed in 6.0-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan

The earthquake struck 17 miles from the city of Jalalabad near the border with Pakistan around midnight local time (3:30 p.m. ET Sunday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Because the earthquake hit a remote mountainous area, “it will take time to get the exact information about human losses and damage to the infrastructure,” said Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the Afghan Public Health Ministry.

“We have launched a massive rescue operation and mobilized hundreds of people to help people in the affected areas,” Zaman said.

Since the initial quake, at least five aftershocks ranging from 4.5 magnitude to 5.2 magnitude have hit the area throughout Monday, according to the USGS.

There are no restrictions on allowing in international aid, and the Taliban government has called for aid agencies to prioritise resources for the assistance of quake-hit areas.

But the abrupt freeze on US Agency for International Development (USAID) earlier this year has significantly affected aid delivery.

Jalalabad's main hospital is already overwhelmed, being right at the centre of the crossing point for the tens of thousand Afghans being deported from bordering Pakistan.

A local reporter who visited the hospital said quake victims' relatives have had to leave the hospital to buy medication for their patients themselves.

It's way up in the mountains. Helicopter rescues. Very limited resources. One of them is a journalist in Pakistan. I'm most interested in hearing from him. I'm sure he has his hands full right now.

Thanks for your kind words, she². ❤️

Pakistan and Iran are kicking out the Afghans in their country . This is causing problems with housing including for those already there since some homes are rented out by people that left and if they are forced ro return they will need their home back.

The cuts by Trump to foreign assistance around the world.

And of course the Taliban itself not allowing women to work.
