So I went to my pharmacy and discussed the COVID vaccine

I live in NC, had a heart attack a few years ago, and am 57. First, they don't have it which didn't surprise me all too much. But literally just today they got an email stating that I would have to have a prescription and prove I had an underlying condition to justify getting it. Oh, and I am a teacher so am around bunches of people a day. Since I am going to the cardiologist for a follow up in the 17th the prescription is no big deal for me, but it still is outlandish that I have to go through all these hoops for the COVID shot. I also got the measles vaccine recently since apparently that is making a comeback. I am one generation removed from people worrying about polio (parents born in 35 and 40). I can't imagine that they, or their parents, would have thought that I would live in a time when a state's schools didn't require vaccines. I sure never thought so. Elections have consequences.

What I haven't yet determined is if our insurance will refuse coverage. I am assuming not, but as you know our insurance is in a bit of flux.

… but we can’t give them until we get the go-ahead from the powers that be (govt and corporate). I expect that will happen in the next week or two.

From what I understand, you can simply state you’re a smoker (past or present) and that should get around the stupid Rx angle because how could they prove you’re lying? *shrug*

and to some extent pharmacy. I will say the smoker thing is something I actually can't do since our insurance had a smoking attestation that I have signed for well over a decade. I think my heart history is more than enough anyhow. The pharmacist basically said he would likely take my word for it anyhow.

or in my case, the self insurance that the state does. But I do fear for my coworkers who healthier than I am since they won't qualify and I fear for lowly paid service workers who may not be able to afford to get prescriptions.

There is no such requirement in Illinois.
In fact, I went to a pharmacy today to pick up a Rx for my wife.
The first question was "Do you want a vaccination today?" They brought it up, not me.

I'd like to know what they do. If RFK, Jr is opposed to all immunizations, and djt has no use for bad news, doesn't that pretty much do away with the purpose of the CDC?

especially any independents, if you can find them. The original rules said you just had to attest to being high risk, you didn't have to "prove" it. Per CDC/FDA, so that's national. My pharmacist said she took people's word for it and didn't note anything in their records. That's per the original rules. If you continue to hear otherwise, consider asking where they got their information on those requirements -- and I'd like to know, if they tell you (and not just mutter incoherently).

As to what an insurance company will cover... Well, as little as they can get away with. You can always contest a denial and see what happens.

I figure I can wait a couple of weeks. Not super happily mind you but it seems a bit extra to bother my doctors for a script merely to get the shot a couple of weeks early.

Thank you, Gov. Newsom and Democratic legislators.

I received the flu shot, asked if they had the new COVID shot. They did and the pharmacist asked if my husband and I wanted that today, too. Yes, please! So we both got both vaccines.

I had been planning on getting both the flu and COVID shots the last weekend of August but got a positive COVID test on Wednesday.
I had had it two years ago after having a shot and just ran a slight temp for 2 days and had a cough and runny nose. That was it and I attributed it being that mild because I was vaccinated. This time I ran a higher fever for 5 days, had chills, body aches, no appitite, no energy, hacked until my ribs felt like they had been broken, had a sore throat, sneezing spells a couple times a day, diarreah, and a stuffy nose. I still have a cough but it is now loose and not constant. I am just now getting about half of my energy back, have lost 5 pounds, have little to no appetite and sleep for hours on end.
My advice to you is to get a shot ASAP because it is also going around in SW Pennsylvania and I caught because it is going around where I live. You are in the middle of the two.

I've got the underlying conditions part and I'm 72, so that's not a problem.

It's the politics that scare me.
