Greek mathematician Eratosthenes in Alexandria, Egypt, who, around 240 BC, used this method to calculate the Earth's circumference, which proved the Earth was round. Eratosthenes observed that a stick in Syene (Aswan) cast no shadow at noon on the summer solstice, while a parallel stick in Alexandria did. This difference in shadows, he reasoned, could only occur if the Earth's surface was curved, as the sun's rays are parallel. He then used the angle of Alexandria's shadow and the distance between the cities to accurately estimate the Earth's size.
