As the son of a decorated WWII veteran, and myself a US Army veteran, my pride in my sons service to our country is immense. In spite of my pride and appreciation of my sons accomplishments and service, there has always been a significant amount of concern for his safety, and that concern was amplified when the current administration with its band of incompetent sycophants began.
It was hard enough worrying about my son being in harms way, but the absolutely unprecedented and criminal act undoubtedly perpetrated by the lawless felon in the Oval Office, and executed by a US Naval vessel and its crew has brought an entirely new concern into the equation. My son and his shipmates now have the potential to be put in a scenario where they may be ordered to participate in illegal and immoral actions.
I still honor the oath I took when I enlisted. The same oath my father took when he fought fascists, and the same oath my son took when he enlisted to serve. My fear now is not just from the threat from enemies and terrorists, but the threat to the ideals of the oath we took from an out of control, lawless sociopath and his gang. I have to be honest, it makes me sick.

(157 posts)That they followed what I consider illegal orders is just such a kick in the guts.
Being an Army vet myself I feel ashamed of our military & country. What the hell are the brass thinking???
Hope your son stays safe and knows he has a duty to disobey illegal orders.

(7,525 posts)USS Sampson, DDG 10. Vietnam era, out of Norfolk, Virgnia, so never anywhere near Vietnam.
I and the rest of the crew functioned as a unit. We couldn't call 911,, and we hd no doctor on board. We each had routine duties (I wasa cook), I was also a phone talker in after steering when we were at General Quarters (battle stations), and stood watch on deck with a .45 pistol while in foreign ports.
We functioned as a unit, all 400 or so of us, to carry out the orders and missions we were given. That was demonstrated during the Six Day War in June '67; we sat in the heat of the Mediterranean off the coast of Israel, not knowing how long we would be there at General Quarters, and there was not one complaint. We had a job to do.
We were commited to following orders, and had no say in what we were doing. I think each of us were hoping that our efforts would somehow have a positive effect in the world.
Anyway, that's a look at my experience; I know things are different for your son; I truly wish the best for him.

(87,659 posts)Thats truly heartfelt.
I deeply appreciate the courage and selflessness it took to face, and fulfill, that duty. Sincerely grateful to (and for) all the veterans here. Just wanted to say that.
And thank-you to bluesbassman as well, for starting this thread. Hope your son stays safe.

(2,383 posts)I am a tin can veteran from the "conflict" in Vietnam. My father and uncle were in the Army during WWII. My grandfather served in the 101st Infantry, Yankee Division, Massachusetts National Guard during the "War to End all Wars." I have the Purple Heart he was awarded during his time in the trenches of France. I despise Cadet Bonespurs and the sycophants who surround him. I still honor my oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and it sickens me to see the way he dishonors the oath he took. May your son stay safe from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

(4,841 posts)And, no doubt, you raised him to think for himself and to distinguish between right and wrong.
I was in the Navy myself, on a Guided Missile Cruiser and on a small Destroyer. I did my job, made great friends, then got out (I sometimes had officers who were more interested in making a name for themselves than they were in safety and well-being of their crew).
I hope your son does well, and enjoys his time in the service.
By the way, as we get older we find that being a Veteran has a lot of benefits, especially health related! And home ownership, which is getting to be out of reach for MANY folks!

He will be fighting for the people on his left and the people on his right if a fight comes.
If you talk to him tell him PWB is proud of him.
Peace.

(25 posts)I am the son of a Vietnam era veteran, grandson of a WWII Soldier, Great Grandson of a man who fought in the Spanish-American wars. I have served in law enforcement, and taken my oath twice. It is my word before God and man to say I will defend those who may not be able to defend themselves.
We have a criminal sitting in the seat of President. Should we be surprised he breeches the law and wishes to confound the courts? We do not need to disconnect from the fact that this is what is happening. We need to acknowledge it and address it for what it is.
"All evil needs is for good men is to do nothing."
People of good temperament, faith in something greater and in the ideals and principles of our government must be preserved. Your son is honorable for his service, and I pray that no one give him orders which bare no weight in human reason as compared to the pursuit of conquest. The world has long past need of the desire to destroy for the sake of gain. Long past need of the wealth of some to be a light to others. Keep the faith in all you've raised him by, and know there are others near him who feel as you do.
Our world is changing - but we are at the crux of a crossroads which will either yield a world which will be for those who stand on peace and seek to protect that peace from the greed and arrogance of a few or fall to ruin and become subject to their control.
Many things are happening at once, and it is hard to know which way to look, or which way to turn - creating a sense of helplessness, powerlessness - hopelessness.
There is more than hope, more than power and all the help we need - do not draw inward, reach out and join with others, join with those whose question is the same as yours - "How shall we move on from this, and who will be lost along the way? Why?"
I cannot tell you the exact outcome, or what lays on the other side of these events - but they are necessary for the next step this world takes in balancing itself.
Begin by balancing yourself - you're not alone.
