(104,770 posts)But here's the story:
A spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry has condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the attack that Israel has now claimed responsibility for.
Dr Majed Al Ansari says the strike hit a residential premises "where a number of members of Hamas' political bureau reside in the Qatari capital, Doha".
He says the attack constitutes a "blatant violation" of international laws as well as a "serious threat" to those in Qatar.
"The State of Qatar strongly condemns this attack, and affirms that it will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behaviour and the continuous tampering with the security of the region and any action aimed at its security and sovereignty," the statement concludes.

The IDF has admitted it.
Well, that's one way to destroy negotiations for a ceasefire.

(20,747 posts)Today's storyline from the NYT:
Israel targeted senior members of Hamass leadership in an attack on Tuesday in the Gulf nation of Qatar, which has been mediating to try to end the Gaza war.
The fate of the officials was not immediately known.

Qatar agreed to host an office for Hamas at the request of the United States, Qatari officials have said in the past.

Qatar agreed in recent weeks to kick Hamas out of its country following a request from the US to do so, capping off months of failed attempts to try to get the militant group whose top leaders reside in the Qatari capital of Doha to accept a ceasefire and hostage release deal in the Israel-Hamas war, US and Qatari sources told CNN.
With efforts to pause the war which has been a top priority for President Joe Biden firmly stalled, US officials informed their Qatari counterparts about two weeks ago that they must stop giving Hamas refuge in their capital; Qatar agreed and gave Hamas notice about a week ago, sources said.
Hamas is a terrorist group that has killed Americans and continues to hold Americans hostage, a senior administration official told CNN. After rejecting repeated proposals to release hostages, its leaders should no longer be welcome in the capitals of any American partner.

WASHINGTON/DOHA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The U.S. has told Qatar that the presence of Hamas in Doha is no longer acceptable in the weeks since the Palestinian militant group rejected the latest proposal to achieve a ceasefire and a hostage deal, a senior administration official told Reuters on Friday.
The tiny Gulf state Qatar, alongside the U.S. and Egypt, has played a major role in rounds of so-far fruitless talks to broker a ceasefire to the year-long war in Gaza. The latest round of talks in mid-October failed to produce a deal, with Hamas rejecting a short-term ceasefire proposal.

"After rejecting repeated proposals to release hostages, its leaders should no longer be welcome in the capitals of any American partner. We made that clear to Qatar following Hamas's rejection weeks ago of another hostage release proposal," the senior official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Qatar then made the demand to Hamas leaders about 10 days ago, the official said. Washington has been in touch with Qatar over when to close the group's political office, and it told Doha that now was the time. Three Hamas officials denied Qatar had told Hamas leaders they were no longer welcome in the country. The spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

(20,747 posts)Qatar, a key mediator between Israel and Hamas, announced on Saturday night that it had paused its efforts to broker a cease-fire between the two sides to end the war in Gaza, citing the deadlock in talks.
Earlier, Qatari officials also told Hamas political leaders they were no longer welcome in the country because of the stalled state of negotiations, U.S. and Israeli officials said over the weekend. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations.
Mr. al-Ansari did not directly comment on the claim about Hamass presence in the country. Before the ministrys statement was issued, an official familiar with the matter said that Qatar had decided that the political office maintained by Hamas in the capital, Doha, no longer served its purpose because of the stalled negotiations.

Frank Lowenstein, former U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace, says Israel's move Tuesday signals a clear message.
"When you start killing negotiators inside of Qatar, you're essentially saying not only are these negotiations dead, but the main intermediary probably won't be playing a meaningful role going forward," Lowenstein told CBC News Network.

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/09/white-house-rebukes-israel-for-its-strike-on-qatar-00552850
The White House on Tuesday issued a sharp rebuke of Israels strike in Doha and assured Qatari leadership that such an action would never happen again.
Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States, that is working very hard, and bravely taking risks with us to broker peace does not advance Israel or Americas goals, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said from the White House briefing room.
The comments, made hours after Israel said it carried out the strike in Doha against Hamas leadership there, is an escalation of President Donald Trumps increasingly fraught relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Leavitt added that while eliminating Hamas is a worthy goal, the president views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States, and feels very badly about the location of this attack.
