The publisher of the Washington Post, Will Lewis, is facing fresh questions over his independence after a cache of leaked files revealed he gave extensive support to Boris Johnson as a secret political adviser when Johnson was prime minister.
The files shed light on how the media executive, who at the time was vice-chair of the Associated Press news agency, worked behind the scenes with Johnson as his premiership was engulfed by a series of scandals.
Lewiss meetings with Johnson, which took place over a six-month period in 2022, were not disclosed in official transparency records, in an apparent breach of government rules.
In July 2022, on the eve of Johnsons announcement that he would resign from government, Lewis spent the day in 10 Downing Street and worked closely with Johnson and his advisers.

(23,370 posts)I knew we were finished when it came out in court testimony that Trump had people essentially working for his campaign at both the NY Times and at MSNBC on the air. It was shocking enough, but what happened afterwards was stunning and told me our democracy was likely finished. What happened afterwards was nothing, no discipline for media contributing to the campaign of a politician with favorable coverage on demand. I remember just a few years ago media members being suspended for donating modest sums to candidates, but now we had journalists literally taking their orders from a presidential campaign and it was A-OK. Haberman and Tur stayed in their jobs and weren't even criticized by their peers all that much.
When that happened, I just had a sinking feeling the media had rigged things for Trump and there was no winning for any Democrat. Unfortunately I was right. And it was more than these 2, Trump had operatives in management in every major media outlet is my safe guess.
And the fact these were two journalists employed by what are supposed to be left leaning media sources and were allowed to continue in their jobs despite being found out to be taking orders from Trump was the coup de gras for our Democracy. The billionaire class decided Trump was going to be their champion to take it all from working people, and that's exactly what's happening, they have come for everything that working people have, everything! They will not stop until they have it all. Everything the labor movement worked for they want back, everything women's rights groups fought for they want back. Everything environmental groups and LGTBQ organizations fought for they will take. Right on down the line. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, public schools and colleges, anything that makes life bearable for regular people is in their sights and Trump is taking it.
