Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years? an audience members asked. Kirk responded: Too many.
The questioner followed up: Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?
Counting or not counting gang violence? Kirk asked.
Then he was shot.
I don't condone violence, but jeez, what an asshole...

(2,326 posts)I am just not going to grave dance. This was absolutely horrible.
Let's hope the perp is caught soon.
What surprises me is not so much Charlie Kirk was murdered, but that so few right-wing political figures have been since Trump took office in January.
Something tells me it won't be the last.

(11,789 posts)No gun death is acceptable, including Charlie Kirk's.
However, as we should all know by now, on April 5, 2023, Charlie Kirk told us that gun deaths in America which are 11 TIMES the number of gun deaths per capita in other high-income nations, driven primarily by a firearm homicide rate that is 25 TIMES that of comparable nations* are an acceptable cost of their "righteous," extremist, reactionary opposition to ALL gun regulation, no matter how modest the measure or how many lives the measure would save.
I suspect that it never occurred to him that he would be one of those deaths he believed are "worth it."
While I grieve the manner of his death as a tragic reflection of the intolerable level of gun violence in our nation, I do not grieve the loss of a man who called for some "amazing patriot" to bail out Paul Pelosis attacker.

It will not go down well in this country. They won't step back. They won't de-escalate. They will use this to justify an escalation. In Congress it started within minutes of his death. Democrats are somehow being blamed.

(15,747 posts)Trump lowering the flags to half-staff is a huge sign. Not saying we're going to have a civil war, but.... It doesn't look good.
And as another person said on a different thread, he didn't believe in empathy so I will follow that ...
I guess I am not as enlightened as I think I am. Because I'm finding some very angry and bitter thoughts in my brain. Did you see Trump lower the flags to half staff for the representative and her husband that were killed in Minnesota? He wouldn't even dignify Governor Walz with a phone call. Fuck all of them.

(11,789 posts)Link to an article about Whitmer's order at the end of this message. I haven't confirmed who else, but frankly, I'm appalled.
He wasn't a federal or state government official or military member, so one can't claim either of those as a reason for ordering flags flown at half-staff. Flags are also flown at half-staff to mark a national tragedy.
The only national tragedy I see here is that the per capita number of gun deaths in America is more than 10 TIMES that of comparable high-income countries. And that number is primarily driven by a gun homicide rate that is 25 TIMES that of comparable high-income countries.
THAT is the national tragedy.
Perhaps every governor who gives a shit about the intolerable number of PREVENTABLE gun deaths in America should order flags to be flown at half-staff until this nation passes meaningful gun control and puts big money into interventions and community-based programs that are PROVEN to reduce gun violence.
The gun death of a man who has dedicated himself to ensuring we DO NOTHING to reduce the number of gun deaths in this nation is absolutely NOT a national tragedy.
I am appalled that any governor who claims to stand strong for REAL American values -- values like human-rights, rule of law, religious freedom, and self-governance, and the thinking underlying those values, among them rationality, compassion as a moral imperative, and scientific inquiry -- would compromise our collective values to honor this man who was hellbent on destroying anything that was halfway decent about this country.
Sure, if you've ordered flags to be flown at half-staff every year on Sept 11 as remembrance, then certainly, do it again. But make the reason CRYSTAL CLEAR. For goodness sake, don't elevate this horrible man with ANY honors.

(19,630 posts)Today I have wondered if someone could have shown Charlie Kirk what was going to happen to him someday in some kind of ghosts of Christmas future scenario if he would have chosen to be an accountant living comfortably and quietly in the Midwest, rather than the bombastic path that led to fame and wealth but also his eventual demise at 31.
