Things are not looking good on the job market. However, I am fortunate to have been able to plan for this so I'm likely in a better position than many others I know (including my colleague who was laid off with me).

I have an appreciation of what you're going though or thinking about possibly going through. I'm still here though. It wasn't easy and I certainly had to pinch every penny. My favorite line at the time time was "how long is this character building going to take?" Still makes me shiver to be honest.

But then I go back to the "I'm still here though." Helps if you have a good support system. I guess I built a lot of character too.

Good luck.

This is the fourth time since 2000, and of those 4, 3 were from jobs I'd voluntarily left another job to take! The lesson for me seems to be "stick with the existing shitty job cause you'll just get laid off from the next shitty job!"

Since we've always known my job was highly unstable, my partner and I have always budgeted as if we would only have one salary. This time it may end up being a forced retirement, given the market, but we can handle it. Our income is going to be cut in half but we won't lose the house or have to move or anything like that. In that respect, I'm both fortunate/privileged (that I've had such good paying jobs) and have planned well.

the most likely way for things to go, I think, is for the Fed to support the bond market heavily, which they've already been doing to to some extent. That's also known as "running the presses" as far as the money supply goes, and will likely cause the same kind of inflation (or probably much worse inflation) than we had as a result of Trump's first term. It's also typically what governments do when they want to spend money they don't have and when their credit's shot. This administration may well spice it up with some equally lousy crypto plays, but one way or another it all winds up rotten. Sitting on cash is the worst thing to be doing in an inflationary environment.

Supply shock 1: High tariff taxes lead to shortages of food, goods and parts for assembly.

Supply shock 2: Labour supply shock due to deportations and stay-at-homes.

The last big supply shock was the oil embargo of 1973 and to a lesser extent 1979. That lead to extended inflation and little or now growth: stagflation.

The example of the late 70's led to an extended period of inflation (as you say), not deflation. Trumps response to any downturn will likely be to print money and inflate his way out of it, as he did immediately during Covid.

When pork loin is the special, under $3.00 per lb., I load up, cut in portion amounts, freeze and seal with the FOODSAVER. Same for beef or fish, shell fish specials. Lucky me, local Produce stand is always as much, or more than 50% less for fruits and vegetables.

By the time of the midterms he will be spinning that MAGA is needed to pull us out of the Biden Recession.

Growing up most of our calories came in 50 lb bags. Potatoes, onions, pinto beans (it takes a long time to sort out the pebbles in 50 pounds of beans), rice, masa harina, cornmeal, and oatmeal. We had peppers, tomatoes, squash, peaches, pears, and apples from the garden. There may have been only one or two dishes, but there was usually plenty of those. We did eat out, not every month, but occasionally. I remember my Mom wanting to go to Taco Bell to see how tortillas were fried. Crispy tacos weren't really a thing yet in Amarillo.

Tariffs taxes as implemented by Herbert Hoover tRump are haphazard, uncoordinated, scattershot and not aimed at onshoring production. He is so stupid. He thinks he can fool American people that they are not paying the tax.

It's a money grab to help reduce the massive increase in US debt he is causing, all for the benefit of the 1 %.
