Five Republicans Join Democrats to Defeat Censure

In a bipartisan effort, the House of Representatives voted 215 to 207 to table a censure motion against Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ). This effectively halted disciplinary action related to an alleged altercation with ICE officials during an oversight visit at the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark.

The five House Republicans who joined Democrats in the vote include Reps. Don Bacon (NE), Mike Flood (NE), Dave Joyce (OH), Michael Turner (OH), and David Valadao (CA).

The vote, supported by five Republicans and Democrats, reflected concerns over the political motivations behind the motion and insufficient evidence to justify censure. Democrats have countered with a resolution to censure Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) for separate allegations of assault and stolen valor, escalating partisan tensions in the House.

The defense team for McIver stated, “There is a simple difference between this prosecution of Congresswoman McIver and the 160 cases involving assault against federal officers on January 6 that the Justice Department has dismissed. It’s all about politics and partisanship.”
