A fine example for her as he "consoles" Kirk's widow.

It's either one, the other, or none of the above. I stopped believing in the tooth fairly long ago.

(8,547 posts)When they married, he hadnt yet fallen down the rightwing extremist hole. Being Peter Thiels puppet didnt require overt religiosity - he just needed that raw depraved desire for money.
Indians/Hindus have many many centuries of their own proud culture and religion, and consider their world far superior to anything the US can offer. Usha and her family are extremely high caste and could have plausibly expected JD to adopt into their world.
They obviously didn't push it on him. Because thats shitty.
Yet here he is bringing the not-so-subtle pressure.
Now he has presidential aspirations and shes embarrassing as both brown and a heathen (in rightwing circles. Im atheist and dont give a shit). Guessing she either converts or gets pushed out. Shes as craven as he is imo. I have zero sympathy for her. She knew what she married.

(24,384 posts)Faith should be a private matter. His mixed faith marriage is not something for public discussion since it represents a conflict in their relationship. His comments and hopes for his marriage should be kept private.
But Vance is an opportunistic pig. Its unfathomable to me how Usha has any respect for him
or herself.

(8,547 posts)Shes as hardcore rightwing as he is. I have zero sympathy for her.
It will just be karma coming back to bite her if JD throws her over for a Christian (*grifter*) influencer like Erika Kirk.
But yes, to your point, its just another data point reflecting JDs character that hes willing to air this conflict in public

(45,841 posts)"For us, it works out now most Sundays, Usha will come with me to church, as I've told her, and I've said publicly, and I'll say now in front of 10,000 of my closest friends, do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church. Yeah, I honestly, I do wish that, because I believe in the Christian Gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way. But if she doesn't, then God says everybody has free will, and so that doesn't cause a problem for me.
He followed it up with a subsequent statement: "My Christian faith tells me the Gospel is true and is good for human beings. My wife -- as I said at the TPUSA -- is the most amazing blessing I have in my life. She herself encouraged me to reengage with my faith many years ago. She is not a Christian and has no plans to convert, but like many people in an interfaith marriage -- or any interfaith relationship -- I hope she may one day see things as I do. Regardless, I'll continue to love and support her and talk to her about faith and life and everything else, because she's my wife."

(5,401 posts)Whoa, 10K & closest is weird at best. I'd be suprised if he had more than ten friends at all He likely has a large circle of grifter acquaintances at best. Dude couldn't even order donuts to share making it obvious he had only ever bought gifts with an agenda. This is a proverbial Devil vs the Deep Blue Sea or a Frying Pan, Fire situation with him next in line for the Presidency.
Actually savvy. But yeah, it is a rhetorical trick, or alternatively, a lie.
Calling them his "10,000" "close" "friends" reminds me of Marc Antony at Caesar's funeral.
He is maintaining a slow burn in the incel youth male demographic. It cultivates pathos which will make his inevitable grievance worship so much more powerful later. I suspect he and Rubio are being played against each other and Vance's naked ambition is going to win out over Rubio's cowed (cucked) technocratic cowardice.

She was a heathen, he had no choice.
I sincerely do not think he would make that directed of a call, invoking her name specifically, without a much deeper motive and hopeful positive outcome for himself - and Christianity is not it - imo.

Interesting- lots of Republicans becoming Catholic lately. Even Charlie Kirk reportedly had a Catholic burial.
Wonder Why
(6,359 posts)My parents told me about it but I witnessed that kind of behavior when we visited my cousins in Calabria back in 2007. One cousin, a devout atheist, was on the Town Council. when the local church had a procession, she was out there leading the way. Whether it was just politics on her part or "just in case", I don't know because she couldn't speak English and we didn't speak Italian so I couldn't ask her a personal question like that without an interpreter.
Belief is in following the precepts of the claimed religion, not making the religion bend to your opinion. Moreover, moving from one religion to another to find one who's distorted view matches yours, is not religion either. If one claims to be Christian but doesn't like the "wokeness" of Christ, one is not a Christian. One can stay or leave a a particular Christian faith based on its rituals but to deny the basic tenets of that religion, means, IMHO, you are not a believer. Religion in that case is just a crutch or, worse, an excuse for your bad behavior.

(2,044 posts). . . shows that divorce is no longer a bar to being elected. I am not old enough to remember Adlai Stevenson, but from what I understand, his status as a divorced man caused many people to doubt that he could "run a country" since he couldn't even hold his marriage together.

(123 posts)Using Christianity as a means to gain political power. It is the ultimate sacrilege, but a lot of people are fooled. Shame on them!

(12,043 posts)... he strained his little brain for a few seconds and come up with: "Well, I think many. I mean, you know, when we get into the Bible, I think many. So many. And some peoplelook, an eye for an eye, you can almost say that. Thats not a particularly nice thing. But you know, if you look at whats happening to our country, I mean, when you see whats going on with our country, how people are taking advantage of us, and how they scoff at us and laugh at us."
Presumably, he was talking about Old Testament verses, apparently unaware of what Christ actually said about that: instead of taking an eye for an eye, turn the other cheek. He called that and other teachings that contradicted the Old Testament a "new covenant." For some pathological reason, people who reject all of it still call themselves Christian.
I gave up religion when I was a teenager, but Christ's teachings about morality have never left me.
Mtnmama
(123 posts)But I believe steadfastly that the two teachings of Christ, that the holy spirit is the spirit of truth, and to do unto others as you would have them do to you, are the embodiment of being a Christian. Simple, but profound. Basically all I need.

(12,043 posts)... to just not be shitty to other people. But they live in a culture that believes that all hell will break lose without fear of authoritarian 'father figures.' Problem is, they have chosen 'daddies' who don't seem to know much about Jesus but give the kids permission to call themselves Christian, anyway.
travelingthrulife
(3,763 posts)It is that compulsion to convert people that is especially repulsive. They wear their 'converts' like scalps on their belt. I see the 'glory to god' type of exclamations about some kid of theirs accepting Jesus after they scared the shit out of them with heaven and hell stories.
