Deadly UPS plane crash sparks airport shutdown and travel disruptions
A UPS cargo plane crashed when departing Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) on the evening of Nov. 4, killing at least seven people. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11's crash marks the deadliest since UPS Airlines' inception in 1988.
"At approximately 5:20 p.m., [Nov. 4], UPS Flight 2976 from Louisville, KY, to Honolulu, an MD-11 with three crewmembers onboard, was involved in an accident in Louisville," UPS said in a statement.

(52,778 posts)The left-side engine caught fire while the plane was going down the runway building up speed to take flight.

(16,848 posts)Did the UPS plane collide with another plane that shouldn't have been on the runway while taking off? I haven't heard any reports saying it was ATC error.

(9,260 posts)like the aircrew saw the burning engine and attempted to reject the take-off, but the plane was beyong the V1 (rejected take-off) speed, so off the end of the runway it went.
Left engine fell off and started a fire, probably damaging the #2 engine in the tail. Plane could fly with 2 of 3 but not with just one.
They got off the ground a couple feet then crashed and flipped in the industrial park at the end of the runway.
