Maine voters reject voter ID requirement, absentee voting changes

PORTLAND (WGME) -- A voter ID referendum in Maine was defeated Tuesday night.

The No on 1 campaign declared victory at 9:30 p.m. after enough results came in that showed they had a big lead in Maine to defeat the referendum.

The Associated Press called the race with around 50 percent of the votes counted and the "No" votes winning 60 percent to 40 percent

If Question 1 would have been enacted, it would have:

Prohibited requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members.
Ended ongoing status for seniors and people with disabilities to automatically receive an absentee ballot.
Banned prepaid postage on absentee ballots.
Limited the number of ballot drop boxes.
Required voters to show a photo ID before voting.
Many conservatives in Maine believed these changes were necessary even though the Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows says there is no evidence of voter fraud in Maine or any other state.
