Trump Threatens Republicans Over Filibuster During 'Uncomfortable,' 'Eerily Silent' Meeting

Trump Threatens Republicans Over Filibuster During ‘Uncomfortable,’ ‘Eerily Silent’ Meeting: Reports

After an election night shellacking, Trump told Republican senators at a private breakfast meeting Wednesday that the GOP will become a “dead party” if they keep the filibuster, insiders told Punchbowl News.

Trump also privately acknowledged the ongoing government shutdown is “worse for us than for them.”

Other attendees told Axios the room was “uncomfortable” and “eerily silent” as Trump urged the senators to end the filibuster, warning the GOP would “get killed” for being “do-nothing Republicans.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) threw cold water on the proposal immediately after the meeting ended.

“I know where the votes are,” he told reporters. “The answer is, there aren’t the votes.”

There are things Trump will admit in private, and things he will admit in public.

In public, he's saying Republicans took a bath because he wasn't on the ballot.

In private, I'd say he KNOWS they took a bath because his STENCH was ALL OVER the ballot.

put them in a true pickle.

And now, after a veritable ass-kicking by the other Party, he wants them to nuke the filibuster because he's painted himself and them into a corner on the shutdown?

Ooof. The silence is the precursor to the pushback.

A grim reality is dawning on them.

They are dead in the water.

Their money and power is at risk.
All their perks and elite status may disappear.

Now dear leader wants them to double down on stupid.

They hitched their wagon to the wrong star.

Fund the government, SNAP and Obamacare fully.

Vote against Trump’s tariffs.

These should be no brainers for Republicans.

They've tried so very hard to rope dems into sharing the blame for what they are doing; trump doesn't care who gets blamed as long as it isn't him.

Please proceed, fools.

Dems need to keep up the pressure.

We need more No Kings protests, I'm hoping for one per quarter until next October, at least.

To be clear, I thought it was the right move from the beginning, but there was a LOT of hand-wringing in the media over it.

I think Democratic leaders understand that caving ONCE means you'll be caving EVERY TIME for the next three years, and they wisely REJECTED that option.

knows full well the ramification that follow changing the rule and it will destroy the function of congress, probably permanently. It'll hurt them, and it will hurt us.
Trump doesn't give a damn about anything beyond his term, he's willing to burn it all for his legacy. I doubt the Republicans will yield on this one. But I've been wrong before so who knows.
