Yeah, I said it. Just watched his interviews with George S. on GMA this morning. I'm late to the party granted. I'm a 56 year old (white) man living in ruby red West Michigan but this guy has the 'it' factor like POTUS Obama does. As an orator, as a man and as a New Yorker. He's absolutely the future of the party because the status quo has proven to be STALE and ineffective for so GD long.
As of very recently I've been of the opinion that the Mayor of NY really has no sway over me and my situation. But when a guy is THIS electric and can connect the way he does then your damn right he has sway and then some. My daughter is moving to NY next spring/summer and I'm much more comfortable with her doing that now than before.

(6,107 posts)I agree that he will be an influence on the party going forward. We will see others, especially newer politicians, adopt some aspects of how he talks about and frames issues.

(81 posts)One I'm from nyc and lets not pretend nyc is a good stand in for the rest of the US. Also he was just elected he could crash and burn as mayor being and campaigning are very different.

(40,733 posts)While we have always run away from NYC as a party, at least since the 70s when there was a reason to run away from it. Sticking with that mindset now that Mamdani has won on themes that even more moderate candidates agree with while winning voters that Trump took from us just a year ago with would be a (classic DNC) mistake.

(10,604 posts)If little old Albuquerque can have free buses, free childcare and free college, dont see why a state with lots of money cant do it. Its priorities and he ran on priorities.
The Republicans are so freaking out today - Laura Loomer is blaming it on the anti-war Republicans.

so I'm giving Mamdani a wide berth to make decisions that benefit all New Yorkers..and if he disappoints then I'll pass judgment...

(10,917 posts)his politics are relevant to me as a resident of New Mexico. I don't recall the last NYC mayor who had the tiniest impact on national politics.
We already have free college for NM residents and free day care for all thanks to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. Oh yes we also have a budget surplus. One might think Democrats should be looking at her because she has real accomplishments and not just promises.

(10,604 posts)If Albuquerque can have free buses, I dont see why NYC cant. Michelle is great and thinks of the people of NM and how to improve their lives. She was also willing to spend millions for SNAP benefits if the gov didnt come thru.
I think his politics are relevant as he said in one of his debates, he is putting NY over visiting Israel. The Republican Party is basically having a Republican civil war over this issue right now. Everything is interconnected.

(10,917 posts)And I just voted for Tim Keller to keep up the good work in Albuquerque.

(392 posts)Obama is a centrist. I dont believe Mamdani could win a Statewide election. He is a strong candidate in Detroit and NYC only. We cant forget that he is a Muslim in a country that elected Trump twice.
Lets please not get ahead of ourselves.
Just my opinion of course.

(2,249 posts)Like, Hakeem Jeffries can get on my nerves at times because I feel like he's consciously emulating Obama and it puts me off. He's not the only one I feel this way about but is a convenient example. Mamdani, who I just heard give a speech last night for the first time, and was very impressed with, doesn't give me that same kinda-wannabe vibe. The similarities are there, but they're less glaring and forced-feeling. The intangibles, if you will

(10,604 posts)And I appreciate his intelligence. But he also won because hes creative in marketing himself and very internet savvy. The young can connect in seconds over social media and him having this social media expertise really pulled in the young.

(12,440 posts)Reminds me of another Dem with an ethnic name and a hope-and-change agenda from 20 years ago. People called him a socialist and communist, too.
