White House tells Supreme Court it doesn't care about the tariff money raised

President Donald Trump has repeatedly boasted that the government is making a “fortune.”

The Trump administration told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that raising government revenue is not the purpose of the emergency tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed this year on all imported goods.

Though the president has repeatedly boasted that the government is making a “fortune” from his new import taxes, Solicitor General D. John Sauer denied that the tariffs are equivalent to a tax and said they would work best if they were never paid.

“These are regulatory tariffs. They are not revenue-raising tariffs. The fact that they raise revenue is only incidental. The tariffs would be most effective, so to speak, if no person ever paid them,” he told the justices.

Sauer’s comments were striking since they follow months of the president’s repeated celebration of the revenue gained from the 10 percent universal tariff he has imposed on all foreign goods and the higher levies he has applied to products from specific nations including China, Mexico, Vietnam and Canada.

1. Because they raised exactly $0.00.

This is what happens when you're a billionaire who looks like a billionaire on paper. You think there's real money when there isn't.

Think about it--if they raised $0 they had precisely 0.000% effect on any prices.

Yet we scream daily about how they're contributing to price increases.

NPR, hardly the most uberfascist organization on the face of the Earth:

When President Trump came into office, he promised to fuel an economic boom with a magic bullet: tariffs. They're taxes added to a wide range of imports. And money is coming in, more than $30 billion a month so far.

That was dated Oct. 1, so the 'month' must have been September (or perhaps August).

Oh, to be so well off that I could confuse $30 billion with $0, but I'm just not there yet.

It's only "not real money" if they're forced to somehow pay it all back, even as a large swath of society is held captive to "this is worth your sacrifice, citizens, we salute your valor and heroism" rhetoric.

4. "most effective, so to speak, if no person ever paid them" so why not eliminate them?

THAT would ensure that no one ever paid them.

5. In other words, they'd just plain ban imports if they could.

But that would require Congress to go along, whereas they think they can do whatever they want by abusing current tariff law.

6. 'Trump Says His Tariffs Collected 'Trillions' In Revenue--Here's The Real Figure'

(Forbes, 8/31/2025) "President Donald Trump on Sunday said his tariffs, most of which an appellate court ruled illegal, have brought in 'trillions of dollars.' "

" 'Without tariffs, and all of the TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS we have already taken in, our Country would be completely destroyed, and our military power would be instantly obliterated,' Trump wrote on Truth Social."

"Trump claimed earlier this month that 'trillions of dollars are being taken in on tariffs' and his levies have 'not caused inflation, or any other problems for America, other than massive amounts of CASH pouring into our Treasury’s coffers.' "

The facts:

"The U.S. has collected $142 billion from tariff revenue so far this fiscal year, which ends in September, according to Treasury Department data released earlier this month. Since Trump’s tariffs took effect in April, his levies have generated about $96 billion in revenue, after customs duties jumped to $28 billion in July, marking an annual increase of 273%. Customs duties accounted for $27 billion in revenue for June, $22 billion in May and $16 billion in April. Before Trump’s tariffs were announced, customs duties totaled $8 billion in March and $7 billion in February and January. Customs duties are tariffs or taxes paid by importers in international trade, meaning companies, businesses or individuals in the U.S. are required to pay levies as goods enter the country. Consumers tend to carry the weight of tariff costs as companies adjust prices to offset or absorb the effects of tariffs."

7. How would they be ignored? Importers pay based on their tariff sheet to take possession of their imported goods.

Is he implying that Importers should eat the costs and not pass them on to consumers or that they should stop importing anything Trump decides to tariff?

Wasn't Agent Orange bragging about the TRILLIONS of dollars the tariffs have brought in, as in 15, then 17, then 19 and 20 Trillion dollars making the country rich, rich, rich.

So-o-o-o rich yet we don't have the money to pay SNAP recipients or extend health care subsidies or anything that actually helps the American public.

So where is all that money??? In Donald Trump's mind/ass or somewhere else? Over-spilling the bank accounts of billionaires or simply the figment of an old man's imagination (lies)?

Inquiring minds and all that.
