Cable and fiber optical companies about to duel where I am.

I came home a couple of weeks ago to find a door hanger on my front door. It was advertising a new fiber optic cable company that offers high speed WIFI for somewhat less than Xfinity, my old cable and now WIFI hosting company. Yeah, OK, fine, let's see how this works out.

A couple of weeks later and there are trucks on my street doing directional boring to install fiber optical cables in our townhome development. I watched as they laid the groundwork for this new service.

Now, the mailings and emails have started coming in. Sign Up Today and Save! Uh, maybe later, once it's all installed and up and running, I''ll see how reliable it is and then maybe consider switching. We've never had any competition for Internet hosting. We cut our TV cable service a while back and switched just to streaming WIFI. Saved us some money. Looks like Cable TV is a goner at this point.

So, has anyone had this kind of competition come in where you live? How has that worked out for you? Any problems? I'm looking forward to seeing what will be on offer once it's all installed and up and running. What is Comcast/Xfinity going to do to counter this? New stuff..

Gateway Fiber is the newcomer. Never heard of it.

I don't know what the new offers are yet. I have to admit it's been a while since I went to the mailbox though. I'm bad about that. I am looking forward to seeing what the offers ARE, as well as some of the more practical/physical matters intrinsic to the fact that I have coax running from the street to the inside of my house, but obviously I don't have fiber optic cable that does the same, so not sure how that piece works. I've gathered I can still use my wi-fi router, which is a pretty nice one (i.e. not from the cable company) but apart from that, not 100% on how the rest of the 'hookup' works

I need to go check the mail lol.

First we canceled the tv part and went to streaming then a few months later we switched internet to metro network

Omg it’s sooooooo fast

Like switching from landline to cable (I know you’re old enough to remember that switch)

And

My internet and streaming services aren’t as much as my old internet was

The only thing we had to change was getting an extender to cover the whole property and it was 9 bucks

5. We recently switched from Xfinity to Gateway Fiber

It’s $20 a month cheaper for comparable service with Gateway. We had it installed in September and so far it works well, no noticeable changes. One thing with Xfinity that Gateway doesn’t include is the antivirus software.

6. your personal online privacy is perhaps the best reason to switch.

you'll be able to pick your ISP, and select one that respects your privacy. it should be faster and more reliable.

they just laid fiber in my neighborhood. i can't wait to send Comcast packing.

7. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon in my neighborhood.

For a long time most of my neighbors have suffered Comcast or AT&T internet service over direct-buried not-in-conduit cables that predate residential internet service. Neither company seems interested in upgrading their basic infrastructure.

We recently got 5G wireless internet service here and I expect many of my neighbors will simply switch to that as part of their cell phone plans. Basic service runs $30 to $50 a month for nominally rated 100 Mbps service. ( There is, of course, an asterisk... )

I've never used Comcast or AT&T as an ISP. Because of aggressive corporate marketing most of my neighbors were unaware that other options were available.

Looking at the gatewayfiber website I see 300 Mbps offered for $65 a month. Given a choice, that's probably more than I'd be willing to pay for internet service.

8. We have two fiber optic companies digging our frontage at practically the same time.

One coming in behind another. The old cable company is still here too. Metronet, Brightspeed, and Optimum cable.

Then they patch it up. My new grass has barely grown before the next fiber company is coming.

I can't wait to get the fiber. It's Hunter Fiber. I used to have cable too expensive so I switched to Verizon and it's so slow barely better than dialup. New one came in and with my hubbies military discount can get for great price.
