Trump Kills AGAIN!!!! - Center for East Asian Studies at U of A

Dear friends of CEAS,

As you may know, the Center for East Asian Studies is a National Resource Center established in 2022 through funding from the US Department of Education. Since that time, we have worked to promote teaching and research related to East Asian languages and cultures on the University of Arizona campus and in the broader community.

Unfortunately, we were informed on September 10, 2025 that the Department of Education was terminating our grant mid-cycle. The reason given was that it had been determined that programs such as ours “do not advance American interests or values.”

Of course, we disagree with this assessment of CEAS. We think that a knowledgeable population is better equipped to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century—especially in a state that is increasingly intertwined with Asian companies in a global economy. But, this is not the time or place for those discussions. The cuts have been made.

Thankfully, the College of Humanities and the Office of Research and Partnerships here at the University of Arizona are continuing their funding of CEAS in the absence of the federal funds and helping us keep the lights on through the end of the academic year. Until that time, we will be operating on a shoestring budget, finalizing some of our ongoing projects and winding things down in an orderly manner. After that—barring some new source of funding—we will have to shut CEAS down.
