1. I still have my original one, issued in 1962 when I got my first job.

I don't know how it is still around, though. It is the only thing I have from that time period.

I was 7.

Walk into a VA facility and I guarantee they will ask your birthday and
the LAST 4 of your SS.

Go figger.

On top of that, Elon and all his unsupervised tech bro brats have all our numbers and other personal data. It is a national security disaster.

Guard Your Card

Do You Need to Show Your Social Security Card?

Your Social Security card is not an identification document and, in many situations, you only need to know your Social Security number (you do not need to show the physical card).

Evidence for Work
Several documents can be used instead of your Social Security card.
Other acceptable evidence includes:
• Birth Certificate
• Permanent Resident Card or
Alien Registration Receipt
• Employment Authorization
Document
• Form I-94 or Form I-94A

Evidence for Department of Motor Vehicles or Driver License (REAL ID)
The only state that requires you to show your physical Social Security card is
Pennsylvania. For all other states, other acceptable evidence includes:
• W-2 forms
• Form SSA-1099
• Non-SSA-1099 forms
• Pay Stubs

For Other Benefits
You should not need to show your physical Social Security card to apply
for certain benefits. You can simply provide your Social Security number for
benefits like:
• Housing
• Health Insurance
• Food Assistance

For Tax Purposes
You do not need your Social Security card, you only need to know your
Social Security number.

Worked for a big retail department store in a mall. The office was also where customer service & lay away was so lots of public there. The manager and assistant were CONSTANTLY leaving people's applications for employment, with SS#s, laying around on a table where customers were also filling out forms for stuff. I got tired of asking them to be careful with those applications where the public could see them. Finally told the District Manager to look for a bunch of law suits from people whose #s fell into the wrong hands.

Or you can just recite your number.

The doctors office does not need it. I never give it to them and can't remember a time when I was told I HAD to supply my SSN. If they ever do, I'm finding another medical facility.

forbid this and they gave a number for my license that was not my SSN. Several years later they got rid of all SSN licenses and reissued everyone's license.

I went to a shop in Iowa and the clerk wanted my SSN for my check. I told her I would not be doing that as it was illegal to even ask for it. She got a grin because she knew I was from Nebraska from my check and she thought she was getting my SSN anyways. Her eyes got big when she saw the obviously non SSN number on my license.

…to take care of her 8 and 10 year old. I was cheap. I was saving up for a ticket to go the Mainland the following summer, where I’d been invited to visit some family friends and relations. Anyway, my dad did 2 things for me: got me an SS card and took me to the bank to open my very own savings account.

It was a big deal, and so was the next summer. Family friends took me to Disneyland and the Berlin Wall went up.
