Negotiating 101 for Democrats

There is an old rule for negotiation that Democrats would be wise to learn: Always ask for more than you are willing to settle for. It is also sometimes called Anchoring High. Children learn this early. If you want to stay out till 9pm, you ask to stay out till midnight. That makes 9pm sound more reasonable by comparison.
If we want universal health insurance, we should be demanding fully socialized healthcare, where the state directly hires doctors. That way universal health insurance looks more reasonable by comparison.
Republicans have successfully used this tactic to move the overton window WAY to the right over the last 40 years, so now we have a fully fascist government deploying masked secret police and the military against US citizens and operating inhumane concentration camps in swamps.
If we want to pull out of this free fall we will need to pull the yoke just as hard in the opposite direction.
Can you think of any other examples we should be demanding?
