Heard In A Redneck Bar In Northern Wisconsin

Last edited Fri Nov 7, 2025, 11:19 PM - Edit history (2)

Some guy was bitching about immigration & "illegals". Another guy, a big guy with a beard & hunting cap said "You don't know what you're talking about. We're all immigrants. The only ones who aren't are Native Americans. They were here first." The other guy shut up & went silent.
Edited to add that it was at my husband's pool (billiards) night.
True story.... last night at a pool hall/bar.

Well any bars anywhere to be fair. Barflys get on my nerves

The only place up here we visit occasionally is actually owned and run by Natives, no not a casino. Doesnt have a pool table though

A truly progressive place ( google it) , they have been having a running dispute with folks in Minocqua and Oneida County (google it) who tried to run them out of business for the past year

They were getting fined daily while open and just this week got their business permit back

and the maiun migration started from eastern Siberia, even they were immigrants

We evolved in Africa. We spread out from there all the way to here.

What we don't know is who those really ancient people were or how they got here. We just know that they came from elsewhere, since we all trace our roots to Africa.

Africa, human ancestry traced back to Mitochondrial Eve.

We are all immigrants - just depends how far back you want to go.

Except that when their ancestors immigrated here, it wasn't other peoples' land - you might say they stole it from the llamas and alpacas ans jaguars and all the other wildlife of the time, certainly. But not from other people.

Same situation. They and native Americans migrated to lands devoid of Homo sapiens. Wasn't anyone there to steal it from.

Or perhaps Neanderthals and Denisovans just didn't breed well. There seems to have never been a hell of a lot of them. They appear to have had quite low genetic diversity and inbreeding issues. A highly adapted species always in danger of extinction. We may have just been the undertaker. Then there's absorption. We carry mostly their non-coding genes. Possibly because much of their genetics was highly adapted, or problematic due to their inbreeding, and got selected out of the human genome. Fascinating stuff!

And they spread through Eurasia from northwestern Europe through central Asia. So, they must have bred well enough. For comparison, we've been around for about 300,000 years and out of Africa in numbers for less than 100,000 years. So, their stay was about 30% longer than ours so far. Homo erectus and previous species were around for a lot longer. So, I'm not sure if inbreeding was a key factor for their extinction.

Anyway, hominns dealing with immigrants is a phenomenon that is literally older than humanity Or, as anti-immigrant MAGA might say to this, "huh?"

who gave the Magat a truth lesson. The only people whose DNA is categorized as indigenous Americans are the Native Americans.

The rest of us have the DNA of wherever our ancestors came from. I am a mix of Scottish, Irish, Italian, and German with a little bit of Denmark and France thrown in.

I wonder if some of them even know how horrible their ancestors were treated by the people who traveled here before them. How would they feel, if it was still happening to their families.

My Mom was born in the U.S, in 1930, but she and her brothers and sisters were often called by derogatory names for Italians. I know it hurt them. Why do people think it's okay to treat current immigrants even worse.?

Oh, but bar room guy's immigrant ancestors were the "good immigrants", not those new ones.

Reminds me of when I was young and my uncle, one of the family historians, set me straight. Early 80's. I'm young and stupid, and I made a nasty comment about Iranians in the US who'd fled the Iranian Revolution. My uncle informed me they are Persians.

To paraphrase his admonishment..."Yeah, that Persia. From the Bible. Iran. Persia. Same thing. They had one of the most advanced civilizations on earth when OUR people were running around in rags, living in smoky stone hovels, stealing each others cattle for sport. So show a little respect. Some of our border ancestors, reivers, English and Scots, were part of organized gangs of thieves, extortionists and murderers. A family tradition for some. So don't start talking about Sicilians either. Our people were tribal. Even for a while after they immigrated, or like our Jacobite ancestors, "transported" to the colonies as punishment."

Guess he didn't buy Sir Walter Scott's whitewashing.

Whether our people immigrated in 1690 or 2019, we all came here for just about the same reasons. None are any better than the rest. Some got dragged here in chains. I love immigrants. I am one too.

I took a small road trip with my doggie from Chicago. Went to the Apostle Islands for a bit…drove on routes 2 and 8 for a bit. Slept in Rhinelander at some random resort I found at night that was cool with my dog! Owner’s adult son was having a 4th of July campfire party on the grounds and he invited me over with my dog. Was a cool night!

Curiosity about “where did I (and my ancestors) come from?” It’ll start you on an amazing journey of discovery. You’ll find out all kinds of information like where they came from and how. You’ll find out some were farmers, some were
constables, some were blacksmiths and so on. You’ll discover that they went through a tremendous amount of loss, such as many of their children fell ill and died before their first birthday. They were tenacious, however. They moved on if needed. They fought in wars. They endured hardships many of us cannot fathom.

Bottom line….they came here from other places and stuck it out to raise a family and start a new life. And it is true for every single one of us. If you go back far enough in your family tree, you’ll discover that your ancestors moved gradually (and sometimes abruptly) from one place to another. Once bigger and better ships were developed, they started moving from further away to cross the ocean. And they came and came and came.

So the next time some braggart goes off on the “immigrant problem” ask them which of their immigrant ancestors they’d turn away and tell them to go back where they came from. Ask them where their ancestors came from. Just plant a seed of doubt about their position on immigrants. Kill their enthusiasm for xenophobia and ignorance with a few simple facts and logic. Even a dumbass redneck can understand what you’re saying.
