It was IN THE "DEAL" proposed by Dems. Extend the subsidies for one year so you're not pulling the rug out from under TENS OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS, then form a BIPARTISAN COMMITTEE to discuss the LONG TERM.
Republicans want the government re-opened WITH THE CUTS INTACT, confident in the knowledge that they will NEVER DISCUSS THE ACA AGAIN, for ANY reason.
The new proposal would have extended Affordable Care Act subsidies for one year and formed a bipartisan committee to tackle health care reforms.

(4,442 posts)Either let it blow up now under Trump and the Republican trifecta or negotiate a long term fix. Don't play the short term game with cheaters and liars.

(1,142 posts)Also sometimes you have to stop the bleeding today to fix the underlying problem. Extending previously intentionally short term subsidies isn't going to address the root cause of spiraling health care costs.
If we extend the subsidies so that nobody making 4x the federal poverty level pays no more than 8.4% of their income, that does nothing to stop the rise in cost and keeps shifting more of the unsustainably rising costs to the government, leaving nobody any incentive to lower costs.
The two biggest insurance companies in Massachusetts, both nonprofits with tighter requirements on spending premiums on care than under the ACA, lost more than 700 million last year and are on track to do similarly this year. Capping ACA premiums isn't closing that gap. It isn't addressing the rise people not on the ACA from seeing sharp roses in premiums or deductibles. We need a reimagined way to address costs. It's pharmacy, it's the increased labor costs, it's increased cost of supplies, rent, etc.

(12,043 posts)The Rs want to separate ACA from the budget bill because they can defeat such a budget reconciliation bill with a simple majority. It really is as simple as that.

(40 posts)Dems don't control the House, Senate, Executive or Judiciary. How do you open something if you didn't close it or control it.

(15,170 posts)Any compromise to reopen government HAS to be put in writing. Simple "assurances" aren't worth the gilded toilet paper Trump wipes his ass with.
He will NEVER approve restoring ACA funding, because:
1. He doesn't give a shit whether American citizens, including his own voters, die for lack of health care.
2. Caving to the demands of Democrats would mean he lost to them. He has to win at all costs, regardless of who it hurts.
3. Project 2025 is all about dismantling government programs that help people or regulate business.
