I remember this

We were receiving checks after unemployment ran out after a plant closing, which happened a lot in Pittsburgh under Reagan.

One month the check didn't arrive.

We requested a duplicate, thinking nothing of it

We cashed the duplicate, and later received a letter telling us both checks had been cashed. Had to go to some office, was interrogated, had to sign my signature like a hundred times.

Nothing ever came of it, and going by the fraud then Republican State Treasurer Bud Dwyer was caught in, I believe the checks never were cashed, it was a ploy by Dwyer to make himself look good by "going after welfare cheats", echoing the Reagan theme.

Dwyer later made a suitable public apology.

"State Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer recently announced that the Treasury Department recovered more than $200,000 in duplicate welfare payments last year.

“It is particularly gratifying to point out that in addition to recovering money paid out as a result of fraudulent requests for duplicate payments, we also have seen a corresponding decrease in the number of people attempting fraudulent requests,” Dwyer added.

I can easily see letters demanding repayment of SNAP benefits already issued for November before the Supreme Court stay from the Trump crew.

They will either go after the States that issued the funds or even possibly the reciprients themselves,

It would fit right in with past Republican behavior
