The City of Sarasota has not been formerly served in the lawsuit filed by Christian and Bridget Ziegler against the city and two of its detectives, but officials confirmed in a statement they have been made aware of it.
In the lawsuit filed in federal court in Tampa on Oct. 31, the Zieglers accuse the city and the two Sarasota Police Department detectives "for deliberate and egregious violations" of the couple's constitutional rights during a police investigation into rape allegations made against the former state GOP chairman in 2023.
The Zieglers allege that the defendants withheld "critical exculpatory evidence," executed an excessively overbroad search warrant on Christian Ziegler's phone records during the course of the investigation and intentionally included personal marital communication in public police reports which were later reported on by media. They state that because of the actions taken by police, it caused harm to their family, professional lives and reputations, as well as economic loss.
The couple is seeking "complete redress" for what they state are unconstitutional abuses, including compensatory and punitive damages, as well as accountability to prevent future violations of citizens' fundamental rights.

As one may recall, Christian Ziegler (former chairman of the Florida Republican Party) and his wife Bridget (Moms for Liberty co-founder and current Sarasota school board member -- who does not send her kids to public schools) -- were discovered to be participants in kinky sex activities during a forceable rape investigation by the police. So now they're suing because the salacious information revealed to the press damaged their reputations.
I can anticipate Trump will likewise sue the government on the same grounds if the Epstein files are ever revealed to the public -- because of their incalculable damage to his reputation...

(2,250 posts)Leaving aside how I might feel about these people's politics, they do have some right to privacy on matters such as these, as long it's all legal and consenting. And it sounds like officials may have been a bit cavalier in terms of what was divulged to the public. BUT Florida is a "Sunshine" state, that by statute allows for a lot more about ongoing cases to be legally divulged (which is a big reason why "Florida Man" is such a "thing" ). Be interesting to see what happens with this case, esp. given no charges were eventually filed.
