WASHINGTON Democrats unveiled a potential path out of the record-breaking government shutdown on Friday, Nov. 7.
The plan, which Democrats characterized as a good-faith offer to Republicans, would codify a one-year extension of health care subsidies that are set to expire at the start of 2026, raising premiums for millions of Americans. The tax credits for Obamacare enrollees are the issue at the center of the 38-day funding crisis.
With Republicans already opposed to the deal, the unresolved back-and-forth virtually guaranteed the shutdown will drag on even longer. But it also was a notable sign of the two parties coming closer together amid hundreds of thousands of missed paychecks, massive travel disruptions, worsening food shortages and other mounting consequences that have intensified for more than a month.
The Democrats' offer includes a proposal to reopen the entire government at current funding levels potentially into next year. Under the framework, lawmakers would, at the same time, advance separate budget bills to fund just some federal agencies and programs at new levels for a full year.

(2,295 posts)I really liked this move. Republicans denied it out of hand proving they dont care about finding a solution. Democrats offer to reopen with a year to negotiate changes while the Republicans obstruct with no discernible plan in sight. If you deny what we offer you sure as shit better have a plan or what are we doing?

(16,263 posts)Everybody knew when they were passed in 2021 that they were going to expire at the end of this year, even before we had the 2024 elections. People didn't vote for them a year ago.

(53,254 posts)and in a democracy, eventually people get what they vote for. In the final analysis, people need to do their jobs and vote sensibly.
