The emotional genius of Zohran Mamdanis social media strategy will be inspected and imitated for at least the rest of this decade.
Almost every candidate uses TikTok and video now, because they must. But even before Election Day, I believed he was the first true TikTok candidate. He has used short videos not only to make his case to voters but also to bring more than 100,000 volunteers into his movement. And in doing so, he has told a transformative story both about who he is and who his voters want to be.
And its even deeper than that.
Watch the video below.

(67,620 posts)him, not just something he has to do to get elected. People feel when they are seen He is authentic in a way that people seldom feel politicians are. Also, he has that delightful smile. His smile is so much a part of his personality that it is what they used to identify his character on Saturday Night Live. He is charming and charismatic. His charm & charisma even come through online. I bet it is even more powerful in person.
He is like Obama, an unusually gifted politician--in the good sense of politician.

Most Dem candidates have become comfortable just complaining about those bad, bad Republicans and the poopoo head Trump rather than actually advancing bold, progressive ideas.
Mamdani is charismatic, but he is also wicked smart and brave as hell, not afraid to put forward ideas he knew would totally piss off all Republicans, the old guard of the Dem party, and billionaires all over the world.
It is a rare combination, and we can't expect all of our candidates to be this powerful. But they should all at least be learning lessons from Mamdani.

(1,894 posts)who make their billions by rigging the markets. And he had the implied support of most of the Democratic Party establishment, if not actual endorsements. Cuomo also had the benefit of universal name recognition and lot and lots of major media who simply couldn't believe that some unknown upstart could ever beat the insider from the ruling family. And in the end, Mamdani got practically zero support from the establishment class of EITHER major party.
His own party simply acted as if he did not exist. And for good reason. Mamdani broke all the rules the Dem Party establishment and all the campaign managers have been following for 40 years or more. If he won, that SHOULD cause the Party to take a hard look at their own concepts of campaigns need to be run in the 21st Century and the Age of Trump.
Don't minimize what just happened. It had better be a teachable moment or else we are never going to get out of this hole. Maybe not every single thing Mamdani did translates to Austin or Mississippi. But much of it can.

Mamdani is the way forward for Democrats in New York City but not Democrats at the national level.

(79,647 posts)AOC won her primary with a viral ad and a bunch of others lost after trying to replicate it. Every candidate needs to run a campaign that reflects them, their stories and the voters theyre trying to reach.

Backed by the organization Brand New Congress, Ocasio-Cortez challenged Crowley in the June primary alleging that Crowley was not progressive enough for the district. Ocasio-Cortez began her campaign in April 2017 while waiting tables and tending bar at Flats Fix, a taqueria in New York City's Union Square. "For 80 percent of this campaign, I operated out of a paper grocery bag hidden behind that bar," she told Bon Appétit.
Ocasio-Cortez was the first person since 2004 to challenge Crowley in a primary. She faced a financial disadvantage, saying: "You can't really beat big money with more money. You have to beat them with a totally different game." Ocasio-Cortez's campaign undertook grassroots mobilization and did not take donations from corporations. It was reported that the designs of the campaign posters were inspired by "revolutionary posters and visuals from the past." During the campaign, Ocasio-Cortez resided in Parkchester, Bronx, with web developer and boyfriend, Riley Roberts.

Before Crowley can get on with his ladder climbing, he needs to do something somewhat unfamiliar: run a campaign. For the first time since at least 2004, he will be forced to compete in a primary in the overwhelmingly Democratic district spanning northern Queens and a chunk of the eastern Bronx. Since Republican victories are all but impossible, the primary is where the action is and where Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 27-year-old former organizer for the Bernie Sanders campaign, hopes to pull off her historic upset.
What Joe Crowley represents is the floodgate between Wall Street and the United States government. Hes the clearing house, he takes millions and millions of dollars in funding from them, Ocasio-Cortez told the Voice. We see how hes come to power locally its totally undemocratic, machine-run, dynastic. Hes trying to spread this same model on the federal level. Ocasio-Cortez, attacking Crowley from the left, is just one of about a dozen candidates running on the slate of Brand New Congress, a political action committee founded by former Sanders staffers to elect more progressive members of Congress. She is the only member of Brand New Congress running from New York.
A resident of the Bronx neighborhood of Parkchester, Ocasio-Cortez organized Sanderss campaign in the South Bronx Hillary Clinton, heavily favored in New York City, won the Bronx handily and started thinking seriously about running for Congress after Donald Trumps election. She learned quickly that people usually didnt even contemplate running against Crowley, let alone start an actual campaign. A lot of progressive groups are coming out of the woodwork. Theyve been trying to find a challenger to Crowley for years, Ocasio-Cortez said. Its literally political suicide for anyone with a semblance of a political career.
While the Sanders wing of the party has derided much of the Democratic establishment as too beholden to the status quo, its hard to find a congressman more representative of that establishment than Crowley. The Blackstone Group is his second most prolific donor. Bank of America, Verizon, and Tishman Speyer, the powerful New York real estate developer, round out the top twenty. He was an unflinching Hillary Clinton ally. Like many in his party, he supported the Iraq War and the Patriot Act. (His campaign argues that his donor list aligns with that of many other liberal Democrats, including Pelosi.)

(71,416 posts)The guy . But he cant get elected everywhere we need a fifty state solution. The candidate should able to get elected in a specific state. I saw the DNC guy on one of the shows they started recruiting great candidates the day after the election wants to work with states too. He is very impressive already working on the ground game.,They will need money, I will send what I can. his state efforts broke the super majority in Mississippi. Three seats were won. He got two dems in Georgia elected to a non-national seat statewide races one monitored electricity. This hasnt happened in 20 years very impressive. Howard Dean said this during Obama first election. It was our best win to date. He should have stayed not been basically fired because the Illinois guy Rahm Emmanuel didnt didnt like him we lost so much. The 50 state solution is the way to go. we compete everywhere and run operations everywhere. All states!

(6,480 posts)They both ran on - the policies they promote - I dont see much difference.
Of course, One is running for Gov and one for Mayor so obviously the policies are geared either to a city or more broadly to a whole state with rural areas needing things more urban areas dont -
But does anyone think if Mamdani were running for Gov he WOULDNT be promoting the same things that Spanberger ran on? Like expanding broadband, increasing support for school funding, raising teacher pay,
Spanberger - Economic growth and workforce development focused on creating high-quality jobs while ensuring that small businesses and working families thrive. Is this not something Mamdani would support?
partnerships between community colleges, trade schools, and private employers, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing. Not Mamdani?
Her plan for Virginias workforce includes a statewide apprenticeship network that connects high school graduates directly to skilled labor opportunities a proposal supported by both labor unions and business groups. WOULDNT this be something Mamdani would propose if running as Gov?
This focus on infrastructure, combined with agricultural support programs, aims to revitalize small towns and strengthen rural economies across the state. Seems very Mamdani to me.
Spanberger helped pass federal legislation empowering Medicare to negotiate drug prices, a policy projected to save billions for seniors. She also supported capping insulin prices and limiting out-of-pocket costs for chronic conditions. I think Mamdani would have supported if in Congress.
Spanberger believes that mental health is inseparable from overall health. She secured funding for school-based mental health programs and local crisis response teams. Her plan for Virginia includes expanding telehealth access and integrating mental health care into primary health systems. Seems very Mamdani to me.
Education Policy: Investing in the Next Generation
Education reform has long been one of Spanbergers defining issues. Her policies focus on equity, teacher pay, and preparing students for real-world
Spanberger voted to expand funding for community policing programs, de-escalation training, and officer mental health services. She emphasizes that safety starts with trust between officers and residents. Sounds VERY Mamdani to me.
.
Spanberger supports Virginias role as a leader in offshore wind and solar development. She has worked to attract green energy investments that bring jobs to rural areas, particularly along the coast and in the Shenandoah Valley. Yeah, again sounds like Mamdani would be pushing if running for Gov.
Her plan for Virginia includes a Clean Energy Workforce Initiative, designed to train thousands of workers for new energy
Spanbergers commitment to restoring trust in government is central to her political identity. Again, not Mamdani?
Spanberger has also supported reforms to:
Increase campaign finance transparency.
Strengthen anti-corruption laws.
Modernize lobbying disclosure requirements.
In her gubernatorial platform, she vows to hold Virginias government to the same ethical standards including pushing for a state-level stock trading ban for elected officials. Not Mamdani?
Spanberger co-sponsored bills to expand mental health care, job placement, and education assistance for veterans. Her plan for Virginia calls for additional funding for veteran transition programs and housing support services. Yup I think very Mamdani.
Oh, and Richmond VA already has some free bus lines.
So whats the difference? Well one is Muslim and one is not. One is critical of Israel and calls out genocide in Gaza and one was critical of Israel back in 2023 (We are deeply concerned by Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahus current military strategy in Gaza. The mounting civilian death toll and humanitarian crisis are unacceptable and not in line with American interests; nor do they advance the cause of security for our ally Israel) but moderated her stance since a bit and hasnt called it a genocide. And there you have it. Ive said it. My opinion only obviously.
So
why do Democrats get sucked into labeling Dems? Rs will call any D a socialist or far left loony Why do we not focus on actual policies and if we did that we could embrace both Mamdani AND Spanberger has the way to win elections.
