ME-GOV: Independent who previously tried to challenge Sen. Collins announces gubernatorial bid

Another independent candidate has entered the race for Maine’s next governor.

Derek Levasseur, who describes himself as a small business leader and published a memoir earlier this year about overcoming adversity, announced his plans to run for governor as an independent in a Facebook post Thursday. He filed paperwork with the Maine Ethics Commission the same day listing a Benton address.

Levasseur said his focus is lowering the cost of living and reforming the state Department of Health and Human Services to increase accountability. He proposes eliminating property taxes on people’s primary homes and increasing government transparency.

Levasseur, who doesn’t have a storied political career, said Maine needs leaders with lived experience.
