Upgrades

For some of us, an Operating System is a home. We spend most of our time on it, we organize it, we customize it, we get everything exactly the way we want it, then along comes the corporation and tells us we have scrap it and get on their new OS.
I got Windows 3.1 just the way I liked it when Windows95 came out.
Well, okay.
I got Windows95 and Plus! just the way I liked it when Windows98 came out.
Well, okay...
I got Windows98 just the way I liked it when WindowsME came out.
Well, okay...
I got WindowsME just the way I liked it when WindowsXP came out.
No. I'm not gonna!
I stayed on WindowsME for eleven years, no problems.
Windows Vista.
It came on a new laptop.
Windows7
Came with a new tower.
Windows10 - the 'Operating System to end all operating systems'
Well, okay...
I get Windows10 organized, customized (I like the classic look of Windows98)

Now you have to junk it and get Windows11.

NO!

I have work habits years old that don't work under at least one implementation of zsh. Just backgrounding a process is now a pain -- I ended up leaving Terminal open to keep the job from quitting when I close the terminal.

Sure, it's change. Life is nothing but change, and look at what Microsoft is jamming up your

It's all AI spyware.

I posted this for switchers, and we linux/mac_unix users are eager to help.

---------------------------
My brother, the least techie person in the universe got tired of every update breaking his drivers and having to reinstall them, so he ended up with a Dell ordered online, with Ubuntu Linux, installed and supported. After helping him find substitutes for office and photo apps, he hasn't asked me anything in many years. It's that usable.

Here are some helpers

1. Linux online tutorial:

https://www.guru99.com/unix-linux-tutorial.html. (nice!)

2. 20 Best Linux Books You Can Download For Free Legally

3. 14 Free Training Courses to Learn Linux Online

People seem to love Linux Mint the most.
There are also slim distributions that run on very old and low-memory hardware.
I recall Xubuntu and Puppy Linux (extremely light)
https://itsfoss.com/lightweight-linux-beginners/

--------------
The BIG THING about linux is that you can shop around for some distribution that looks and works damn close to how you like it to,

AND, you can change it!

Since the source code is visible to all users, including those power hackers, someone undoubtedly has tweaked any particular distribution "their way" so you can search for a special tweak (or ask here or some other forum or search the web).
--------------

Some of the latest distributions, like Zorin
https://www.democraticunderground.com/109537349
are meant to be friendly to beginners and switchers.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!

No, I don't need Copilot, I paid attention in High School and College.
Even learned how to use a slide rule.

I'm now asking every month - "Hey, Sysadmin, when are they going to fix the Formula Functions in Excel and Project - I still have to reprogram them in VB, because anything more complicated than Middle School formulas is still adding numbers I didn't input and telling me what it thinks I want my budgeting risk analysis answer to be..."

I hate fighting my OS at work.

I used to take my lunch break with I.T. guys. I learned a lot from them.
The biggest lesson ever learned I can pass on:
Always use a crap computer or laptop for internet and save nothing on it,
and keep your good computer as a standalone to keep all your data.
I've used the two-computer system ever since.

Want to weigh in on this?
Are we all just being played?
Is it really necessary?
Or is it all about money?

I bought a Windows11 machine last month, but have been apprehensive about starting it up.
Then I started thinking, with the way things have been going lately with the billionaire tech bros,
is it really increased security or invasion of privacy loaded with Palantir??
